A Shift in Software Paradigms

“In terms of AI in software, I think people should understand that apps are going to disappear,” Pei stated during an interview at the SXSW conference in Austin. His consumer electronics brand, known for its distinct smartphones and accessories, is at the forefront of this transformation.

Pei’s insights come as the company recently closed a $200 million Series C funding round, bolstering the idea of an AI-first smartphone using advanced personalization technology. This technology aims to be so intuitive that it’s no longer necessary for users to verify AI-generated outputs.

Defining AI-First Devices

During his SXSW interview, Pei elaborated on the steps toward realizing an AI-first device. The initial stage involves AI features that carry out tasks on behalf of users, like making reservations for flights or hotels. However, Pei described this capability as “super boring,” indicating that the future holds more intriguing possibilities.

The subsequent evolution will see AI learning users’ long-term intentions. For instance, if a user aims to enhance their health, the device could proactively offer suggestions and nudges to achieve that goal.

“When the system knows us so well, it will generate ideas we didn’t even realize we wanted,” Pei explained, drawing a parallel to ChatGPT’s memory feature that personalizes interactions over time.

Rethinking User Experience

Pei articulated a vision for smartphones that operate autonomously, handling tasks without requiring user commands. “The current way we use phones is very old-school… it hasn’t really changed for like, 20 years,” he noted, expressing frustration over how little the fundamental user experience has evolved since the introduction of the iPhone.

He further emphasized the challenges users face, detailing a scenario where obtaining a simple cup of coffee requires navigating multiple apps—like messaging, maps, ride-hailing services, and calendars. “It’s very hard to get things done on a phone,” Pei remarked, underscoring an inefficiency he believes AI can solve.

The Future Interface

Pei envisions a future where smartphones or operating systems understand user intentions and execute tasks automatically. This transition will involve designing interfaces tailored for AI agents, rather than expecting agents to interact with traditional human-centric interfaces.

“That’s not the future. You need to create an interface for the agent to use. I think that’s the more future-proof way of doing it,” he asserted, suggesting that while apps won’t disappear overnight, a shift is necessary towards a more seamless integration of AI capabilities.

In conclusion, Carl Pei’s forward-thinking perspective captures a significant shift in how we might interact with technology in the future. With continual advancements in AI, the way we use our devices could fundamentally change, moving away from app-centric models to intelligent systems that cater directly to our needs.
