Google Amplifies Its Presence in AI-Powered Shopping

In a strategic move during the National Retail Federation’s annual conference this past weekend, Google announced its initiative to transform Gemini into a merchant platform. This announcement comes amidst fierce competition with companies such as OpenAI, Amazon, and Perplexity, all vying for influence in a rapidly evolving AI-driven shopping landscape.

Partnerships for Progress

Google revealed key collaborations with major retailers—including Shopify, Walmart, Target, Wayfair, and Etsy—to develop a new protocol aimed at establishing a standard for AI shopping. The new standard, dubbed the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), is designed to streamline interactions between AI agents and retail systems throughout the shopping journey—from product discovery to payment and post-purchase support. In a blog post, Google vice president of ads and commerce, Vidhya Srinivasan, noted that this initiative creates a “common language” for AI tools, enhancing their capability to seamlessly integrate with online shopping systems.

Introducing AI-Powered Shopping Features

A key highlight of the UCP is its ability to enable a forthcoming “checkout feature” on both Search and Gemini. This feature will allow consumers to make purchases directly through AI tools, removing the need to navigate between various apps and websites. By implementing this capability, Google aims to position Gemini and its Search AI in direct competition with offerings like Microsoft’s Copilot and OpenAI’s ChatGPT, both of which have already introduced purchasing functionalities into their platforms.

Open-Source Advantage

The UCP is an open-source standard, which allows for broad adoption within the eCommerce ecosystem. Retailers and developers will not need to build their own proprietary systems for conducting transactions via AI agents, making it easier to harness the benefits of generative AI. The protocol is compatible with existing industry standards, such as the Model Context Protocol. This positions UCP favorably against similar initiatives, like OpenAI’s recently launched Agentic Commerce Protocol.

Industry Buy-In and Future Prospects

UCP has received endorsements from over 20 organizations in the online shopping ecosystem. This includes prominent payment networks like Visa, Mastercard, and PayPal, alongside well-known retailers such as The Home Depot, Macy’s, and Kroger. With such extensive collaboration, UCP aims to create a unified shopping experience and serve as a robust foundation for future AI innovations.

New Business Agent Interaction

In addition to the checkout feature, Google is introducing a business agent that allows consumers to engage directly with brands via Search. This virtual assistant will provide answers about products in a brand’s unique voice, enhancing customer service experiences. Initial partners for this service include retail giants such as Lowe’s and Michael’s.

A Competitive Landscape

The announcements reflect a significant shift, with enterprises like Amazon deeply embedding AI into their shopping experiences. Although the utility of AI in shopping is still being tested, Google is optimistic about its widespread adoption. CEO Sundar Pichai highlighted that the UCP is laying the “groundwork” for what could soon become a leading method for how consumers engage in ecommerce.
