Californians are embracing a groundbreaking method to combat the pervasive issue of data brokers accumulating and monetizing personal information. With a newly enacted law going into effect at the beginning of this year, the state now boasts one of the most stringent privacy regulations in the nation.

The California Privacy Protection Agency has noted that over 500 companies engage in the relentless pursuit of various pieces of information about individuals. This data is then meticulously packaged and sold to marketers, private detectives, and other entities, creating a significant threat to personal privacy.

According to the nonprofit organization Consumer Watchdog, in 2024, data brokers were found to be gathering information from a myriad of sources, including automakers, technology firms, fast-food chains, and device manufacturers. They compile financial details, shopping habits, family dynamics, fitness activities, travel plans, entertainment preferences, and much more from unsuspecting individuals, often without their consent.

Scrubbing Your Data Made Easy

Back in 2021, California’s Delete Act was implemented, mandating that data brokers offer residents the ability to request a copy of their personal information and demand its deletion. Despite this legislation, Consumer Watchdog discovered that only about 1% of Californians took action to exercise these rights within the first year. A significant barrier to participation was the cumbersome process; individuals had to file separate requests with every broker, creating an overwhelming burden for most residents.

The latest law, known as DROP (Delete Request and Opt-out Platform), which took effect on January 1, 2024, is set to simplify this process significantly. Under DROP, California residents can now submit a single request for the deletion of their data, as well as prevent any future collection. The CalPrivacy agency will then relay this request to all relevant data brokers, effectively streamlining the process and empowering residents.

This innovative approach not only enhances consumer autonomy but also reflects California’s commitment to protecting the privacy rights of its citizens. With this new law in place, Californians have a robust tool to combat the intrusive practices of data brokers and reclaim control over their personal information.
