Welcome to the Decoder End-of-Year Special!
As the year wraps up, Decoder hosts Kate Cox and Nick Statt reflect on a bustling 12 months packed with nearly 100 episodes, the launch of a dedicated YouTube channel, and an ad-free podcast feed. This year has brought a rich tapestry of diverse guest hosts, especially during Nilay’s parental leave, culminating in an engaging array of discussions.
Audience Engagement: The Heart of Decoder
An essential part of Decoder’s success has been its enthusiastic audience. This year, insightful questions and comments have poured in, sparking a tradition of ‘turning the tables’ on Nilay during the final episode of the year. Topics ranged from CarPlay and episode suggestions to the ever-evolving landscape of artificial intelligence.
Grilling Nilay: Lessons from the Year
In this year’s episode, Nilay joined the conversation to answer these queries and share his reflections on the past year. He acknowledged what worked well, identified areas for improvement, and discussed the future direction of Decoder, ensuring it continues to evolve with its audience.
Feedback Implementation and Future Endeavors
One of the most popular questions from last year was about the absence of Decoder on YouTube. Fortunately, that was addressed with the launch of the Decoder YouTube channel in October, now featuring full video episodes weekly. Moreover, the introduction of ad-free podcast options for Verge subscribers has been another value-added change since October.
Looking Ahead: Expanding Formats and Live Events
The team has also received requests to transform Thursday explainer episodes into full video formats. While this process is resource-intensive and requires careful planning, the ambition remains strong. The future promises more experimentation with formats, including potential live productions in 2026, kicking off with a special event at CES on January 7 at the Brooklyn Bowl.
