In the fast-evolving tech landscape, the term “RAM crisis” has become increasingly prevalent. The diminishing supply of memory chips poses significant challenges for various industries, particularly artificial intelligence. This burgeoning field is not only disrupting consumer electronics but seems to be consuming all available resources, including those that typically satisfy consumer needs. This article seeks to provide you with five essential tips when navigating the current memory shortage crisis that has implications far beyond the consumer market.

The purpose of this article is to highlight five computing hardware components that are worth purchasing sooner rather than later. The ongoing crisis not only affects RAM but has significant ramifications across various hardware categories. As prices for crucial components continue to rise, finding good deals on quality devices will become increasingly challenging.

While my predictions can’t be considered guarantees, they are based on current trends and experiences within the tech industry. After considering recent developments in the RAM crisis, I hope to steer you towards beneficial purchases before prices escalate further.

1. Apple MacBooks — Especially the MacBook Neo

Tim Cook recently revealed that Apple products, including MacBooks, are likely to face substantial price increases in the near future. The word “unavoidable” was highlighted in discussions about these upcoming hikes, sparking concern among potential buyers.

One notable concern is the potential fate of the MacBook Neo. As Apple has strategically eliminated entry-level models in other product lines—which aligns with price hikes—similar changes could occur for the Neo. Should Apple choose to remove its entry-level MacBook Neo, the minimum price for a new model might be pushed up immediately.

Therefore, securing a MacBook Neo at its current entry-level price could indeed represent a savvy purchase, especially considering that early Prime Day discounts are already popping up.

Overall, exploring options for various MacBook models now can safeguard against noticeable price increases down the line.

2. SSDs

In light of the ongoing component crisis, purchasing an SSD while you still can is highly advisable. However, finding one at an acceptable price may soon prove difficult due to supply chain issues.

Examples like Samsung’s 990 Pro SSD have remained competitively priced, but that situation may change quickly. Notably, a VP at Silicon Motion raised alarms by stating that “the retail SSD market has almost disappeared.” Most SSD products are being redirected to data centers and OEMs, leaving minimal stock for everyday consumers.

Considering SSD prices are still climbing, now might be the optimal time to secure one before the market changes further.

3. External Hard Drives

Following up on storage needs, external hard drives are also reflecting alarming price increases. According to recent findings, external drives surged 34% in price over the past year and a shocking 58% in a single month as of June 2026.

If you require extra storage for backups, now is the time to consider investing in external hard drives. Their prices are on track to continue rising significantly.

4. Windows 11 Laptops

The overall trend in rising component prices also impacts Windows 11 laptops. With Nvidia’s CEO predicting that the RAM crisis could persist for years, consumers may find it increasingly difficult to secure affordable laptops amidst these rising costs.

Purchasing a Windows 11 laptop now, especially during promotional sales, could save you significant amounts. Taking action sooner rather than later is advisable.

5. Graphics Cards

Lastly, if you’re contemplating upgrading your graphics card, acting quickly is recommended. Price increases have primarily affected high-end models, but the trend is expected to expand to mainstream products.

Recent reports indicate growing prices for Nvidia GPUs and data from Tom’s Hardware suggests that even more general models are creeping up in price. The AMD RX 9070 XT, on the other hand, offers excellent performance and is still available at relatively lower prices, making it a solid option for anyone looking to upgrade.
