Upcoming Microsoft Surface Devices: What to Expect

Rumors are swirling about the next generation of Microsoft Surface Pro and Surface Laptop models. While the anticipated refresh is generating buzz, indications suggest that upgrades will be relatively minor. However, there’s a noteworthy addition on the horizon: an OLED option for the Surface Laptop.

Minor Upgrades on the Horizon

According to a report from Windows Central, upcoming Surface models will include both Intel and Arm-based options. The Intel models will be powered by Core Ultra 3 (Panther Lake) processors, while the Arm versions will utilize Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X2 Plus and X2 Elite CPUs. However, it’s unlikely that these models will feature the high-end Snapdragon X2 Elite Extreme, nor will the Intel offerings extend to Core Ultra 9 processors, focusing instead on Core Ultra 5 and 7.

Notably, the Intel-based Surface devices are expected to hit the market in the spring, followed by the Snapdragon models during the summer months. Despite the hardware changes, the design of both the Surface Pro and Surface Laptop will remain similar to previous iterations, albeit with a few new colors. The most significant enhancement will be the inclusion of an OLED display for the higher-end configurations of the Surface Laptop, aligning it with the Surface Pro offerings.

Processor Choices and RAM Options

For entry-level models, Microsoft is set to offer a choice between Intel CPUs and Snapdragon chips, breaking from the current practice where only Snapdragon powers the consumer range. The rumored memory and storage configurations for these devices start at 16GB RAM and 256GB storage, with upgraded versions scaling up to 64GB RAM and 2TB storage.

It’s important to approach these rumors with caution, as they stem from leaks rather than official announcements. However, the general trend suggests that Microsoft aims to maintain its competitive edge amidst an ever-evolving tech landscape.

Concerns About Pricing

One of the biggest worries surrounding the next-gen Surface models is their potential pricing. Recent hikes across the Surface lineup—some models seeing increases of up to $500—have stirred concern among consumers. The anticipation is that these new models will arrive with similarly hefty price tags. As one Reddit user succinctly put it, “What a boring release. And disappointed they aren’t offering the high-spec’d Snapdragon. For their new crazy price point, it should have been included.”

With the Surface Laptop 13-inch’s price point jumping by $300, customers have every reason to be cautious. Given that pricing across Microsoft’s products has escalated recently, speculation is that the new Surface range, set to debut in 2026, may follow suit, leaving many to question their overall value compared to competitors, like Apple’s MacBook lineup.

Future Outlook

As Microsoft prepares for these new releases, the landscape is highly competitive. The Surface devices have long positioned themselves as innovative options for consumers, but the recent pricing adjustments raise questions about their market viability. Those who prioritize value might be swayed by alternatives like the MacBook Neo, particularly as its popularity surges.

Ultimately, while the upcoming Surface Pro and Laptop models have some intriguing features, the lukewarm upgrade cycle and escalating prices may generate more skepticism than excitement among loyal Microsoft fans. For ongoing updates, refer to the source of this information here.
