Apple’s MacBook Neo: A Surprising Contender in the Budget Laptop Market
When we recorded the latest episode of the TechRadar podcast, we were buzzing with excitement following the significant product announcements from Apple. The lineup included the highly anticipated iPhone 17e, an updated iPad Air M4, and the new budget-focused MacBook Neo.
Initially skeptical about Apple’s ability to deliver a high-quality budget laptop using the A18 Pro chip from the iPhone 16 Pro and just 8GB of unified memory, I expected the MacBook Neo to be a disappointment. However, after testing the device, it became clear that my assumptions were incorrect.
Our Computing Editor, Matt Hanson, went as far as to declare it the “best budget laptop you can buy right now.”

Beautiful Inside and Out
The MacBook Neo’s design is its first triumph. Available in vibrant colors like silver, black, pink, and lime green, the MacBook Neo is visually striking. The stunning aesthetics are present not only in its exterior but also across the keyboard and macOS interface.
Coupled with its silent, fanless operation, sleek macOS software, and gorgeous 13-inch 2408 x 1506-pixel display, the MacBook Neo exudes a premium quality that many budget laptops fail to achieve.
While the visual appeal may not be as critical as performance, it certainly contributes to the overall user experience.

In terms of aesthetics, I’m currently testing the Rokid AI glasses, which, despite their impressive AI capabilities, lack the visual flair of Oakley or Ray-Ban products. Their bland design makes them less appealing than the MacBook Neo, which stands out as a budget gadget you’ll be proud to use.
But looks alone wouldn’t suffice; fortunately, the MacBook Neo excels in performance as well.

iPhone Chip, MacBook Performance
Initially, I doubted that the MacBook Neo could deliver a satisfactory laptop experience without an M-series chip. Yet, our review revealed that this device provides a seamless macOS experience that is not constrained by iPhone or iPad software compatibility.
While it may not excel in resource-intensive tasks such as 3D modeling or heavy video editing, it handles standard productivity tasks with ease. Impressively, the MacBook Neo achieved higher Geekbench 6 scores than the MacBook Air M1 and surpassed the MacBook Air M2’s single-core performance, all with a mobile chip.

This performance aligns with our testing results. While simpler tasks and light gaming are feasible, high-demand activities like scientific simulations will struggle due to multicore performance limitations and 8GB of unified memory.
However, when compared to budget Chromebooks and Windows 11 laptops, which typically come with stricter limitations and lesser performance, the Neo stands out as a clear leader in its category. It may not be the ultimate laptop, but it’s the best option available for those prioritizing affordability.
In conclusion, Apple has undoubtedly proven me wrong about the MacBook Neo, and I couldn’t be more pleased. As tech costs continue to rise, it’s refreshing to see a budget-friendly option succeed, particularly from a reputable brand like Apple. This model caters perfectly to students and anyone seeking an economically viable productivity device.
