OpenAI Unveils GPT-5.1: A Closer Look at Enhanced AI Models
On Wednesday, OpenAI introduced two updated versions of its flagship AI models: GPT-5.1 Instant and GPT-5.1 Thinking. These upgrades are now available within the ChatGPT platform, and OpenAI is positioning them with a warmer, more conversational tone, aiming to create a better user experience.
Responding to Feedback Amid Controversy
The launch of GPT-5.1 follows several criticisms earlier this year regarding the overly cheerful and sycophantic nature of previous models. Simultaneously, OpenAI faced backlash after modifying the default output style of GPT-5 in response to multiple lawsuits concerning suicides linked to its AI interactions.
In a climate where scrutiny from lawyers and regulators is mounting, OpenAI’s approach to releasing new AI models has become more cautious. Unlike a year ago, when new versions could be released with little hesitation, the company now prioritizes transparent communication and user feedback.
Overview of the New Models
The GPT-5.1 Instant model is set to be ChatGPT’s default option for speedier responses across various tasks. Meanwhile, the GPT-5.1 Thinking model focuses on simulating reasoning, excelling at more complex problem-solving assignments. OpenAI asserts that both models surpass the performance metrics of GPT-5, particularly in technical assessments such as the AIME 2025 and Codeforces evaluations.
Enhanced Communication Styles
One of the most significant changes in GPT-5.1 is its presentation. Users provided feedback expressing a desire for more diverse communication styles based on the context of their queries. As a response, OpenAI is offering eight preset personality styles: Professional, Friendly, Candid, Quirky, Efficient, Cynical, and Nerdy, in addition to a Default setting. These presets allow the underlying model to tailor its responses while maintaining consistent capabilities across all styles.

Adaptive Reasoning and Future Rollout
Another notable enhancement in GPT-5.1 Instant is its use of “adaptive reasoning.” This feature allows the model to determine when to invest additional computational resources into processing prompts, leading to potentially richer outputs.
OpenAI plans to gradually roll out these models over the coming days, starting with paid subscribers and later expanding access to free users. Both models will soon be available on the API, specifically as gpt-5.1-chat-latest for Instant and GPT-5.1 for Thinking, both equipped with adaptive reasoning. The older GPT-5 models will remain accessible to paid subscribers for three months under the legacy models dropdown.
