Apple Unveils the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max: A New Era in Smartphone Photography
At today’s highly anticipated Apple event, the company unveiled its latest flagship devices: the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max. The first thing that catches the eye is the strikingly large, horizontal camera bar that spans the back of the devices. While some may find it a bit overwhelming, the new camera upgrades beneath the surface are quite impressive.
Design Overhaul: A Blend of Strength and Style
This year’s design marks a significant shift from previous models, moving away from titanium and opting for a half-glass, half-aluminum rear panel. The updated design boasts a Ceramic Shield back, which Apple claims is four times stronger than the glass backs used in earlier iPhones. Notably, the Apple logo has been repositioned lower, making room for enhanced MagSafe functionality.
In addition, the front display features Ceramic Shield 2, which is three times stronger than previous versions. Consumers should also be aware that the new iPhone models are slightly chunkier than their predecessors, which could affect the in-hand feel.
Display Features and Innovations
The iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max retain the same 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch LTPO OLED panels with ProMotion technology. A new anti-reflective coating, part of Ceramic Shield 2, enhances visibility, although the absence of a matte display option is disappointing. Given that Apple’s iPads, Macs, and monitors offer similar features, the addition of a matte option would have been timely. Competing Android devices, like Samsung’s Galaxy S25 Ultra, have incorporated matte coatings that significantly reduce reflections.
Camera Capabilities: A Photographer’s Dream
The large new camera bump is not merely ornamental; it houses a suite of upgraded lenses, including a larger 48MP Wide, Ultrawide, and a revolutionary Tetraprism Telephoto lens. This will make the iPhone 17 Pro Max the first iPhone to feature three 48MP Fusion sensors. Users can now enjoy up to 8x optical zoom — a notable improvement from the previous 5x capability — and a digital zoom of up to 40x, making it a powerful tool for photography enthusiasts.
The selfie camera also gets a much-needed upgrade, featuring Apple’s new 18MP Center Stage shooter, designed specifically for content creators looking to capture high-quality videoconferencing.
Professional Features for Content Creation
Apple has rolled out an array of new “pro” camera features tailored to professionals. Users can now shoot in ProRes RAW for improved image resolution and extensive editing capabilities. The introduction of Genlock support allows filmmakers to use the iPhone seamlessly alongside other professional cameras. To exemplify these features’ capabilities, Apple confirmed that its entire event was filmed using the iPhone 17 Pro.
Performance and Battery Life: A Leap Forward
Powering the iPhone 17 Pro models is the new A19 Pro chip, which boasts an upgraded GPU and faster neural processing capabilities. With a state-of-the-art vapor chamber cooling system, Apple claims that these devices are 40% more efficient than their predecessors. In terms of processing power, the CPU is allegedly the fastest in any smartphone, giving it MacBook-level performance, as asserted by Apple.
Battery life has also seen improvements, with wireless charging now supporting up to 25W speeds via Qi 2.2 technology, allowing for quicker top-ups.
New Accessories and Colors
In conjunction with the iPhone launch, Apple introduced a new TechWoven case that replaces the FineWoven line. The case utilizes overlapping yarn threads for a unique design and offers clear options to showcase the bold new orange color option. All new cases come with redesigned buttons for a better tactile experience, along with lanyard straps for added functionality.
This year’s color palette features a sophisticated dark orange, along with familiar choices like black, silver, grey, and dark blue. Notably, storage options start at 256GB for the Pro models, and the Pro Max can be configured with up to 2TB, a first for any iPhone.
Availability and Pricing
Pre-orders for the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max begin on Friday, September 12, with pricing starting at $1,099/£1,099 for the Pro and $1,199/£1,199 for the Pro Max. Devices are expected to ship the following Friday, September 19.
