Apple’s Innovative Solution to Battery Shipping Regulations

In recent years, as smartphone technology has evolved, manufacturers have increasingly focused on enhancing battery capacities. A significant development in this area has been the adoption of silicon-carbon chemistry, which enables the production of higher-density cells. This advancement allows for larger batteries without compromising phone sizes. However, navigating international shipping regulations has posed a unique challenge for these companies, particularly concerning batteries with cells exceeding 20Wh.

Challenges with Shipping Regulations

The stringent shipping regulations have forced manufacturers into a dilemma: either to split batteries into multiple cells to comply with the 20Wh limit or to produce smaller batteries specifically for certain markets, like the European Union and the USA. Apple, always known for its innovative approaches, has ingeniously sidestepped these restrictive rules using a software method.

Apple’s Software Limitation Technique

This clever workaround is revealed in the support page for the iPhone 18 Pro Max. Essentially, Apple implemented a software limitation that restricts the battery charge to below 20Wh during initial startup. This feature ensures that the iPhone remains compliant during shipping. However, users can unlock the full battery capacity once they power on their device for the first time. Notably, the capacity for the eSIM-only model in the US is rated at 5,567mAh (21.75Wh), while the model designed for the European market, which includes a physical SIM card slot, features a slightly lesser capacity of 5,391mAh (21.06Wh).

It’s essential to mention that these capacities are rated values and should not be directly compared with batteries in Android devices, which often highlight typical capacity instead.

Regulatory Perspectives and Future Implications

As per regulations, the US transport authority had permitted this shipping method as of June 2025. While other regulatory agencies, including ADR, IATA, and ICAO, haven’t provided formal positions, the availability of the iPhone 18 Pro lineup in the EU suggests a tacit acceptance of this approach.

Moreover, Apple has built flexibility into the system, allowing users to toggle this feature on or off depending on their usage—especially useful for those shipping their phones abroad. If users decide to ship their devices, they can disable the feature before sending it off, thus complying with international standards.

In 2026, a proposal was considered by the UN Sub-Committee of Experts on the Transport of Dangerous Goods specifically addressing the regulations pertaining to single-cell batteries. This proposal highlighted that maintaining the 20Wh boundary is increasingly outdated, given that a similar type of multi-cell battery could easily exceed this limit. Discussions are ongoing regarding updating these regulations by 2029. Until those updates are implemented, Apple’s innovative workaround stands as a significant achievement.

Setting a Precedent in the Industry

Apple’s shipping method is likely to set a new standard, potentially paving the way for smartphones with larger battery capacities to enter both European and US markets without the current regulatory complications. This change could ultimately lead to fewer variations of the same phone model being produced for different regions, which benefits consumers by simplifying choices and enhancing device performance.
