The Xiaomi 18 Fold: A New Era for Foldable Phones
Samsung may have pioneered the foldable phone market, but Xiaomi’s latest offering, the Xiaomi 18 Fold, is turning heads and raising expectations. This innovative device not only features a robust triple-lens rear camera setup but also houses a formidable 6000mAh battery within its compact, passport-sized design. Additionally, it decisively outperforms the anticipated Apple iPhone Fold by a remarkable 24 hours in battery longevity.
First Impressions at IFA 2026
Unveiled at the IFA 2026 event in Berlin, the Xiaomi 18 Fold caught attention even while being showcased behind glass. The formal launch took place in China, where the phone is primarily intended for sale. Following a hands-on demo, one can’t help but wonder if this device has set a new standard in the category of wide-style foldable phones.
Design and Display
The Xiaomi 18 Fold is surprisingly compact, measuring even shorter than the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8. Featuring a striking cherry red exterior, its sharp corners near the hinge and rounded edges contribute to an aesthetic reminiscent of the original Google Pixel Fold. The bezels are impressively slim, allowing the 5.38-inch OLED display to dominate the front.
When unfolded, the device transforms into a media-friendly 7.58-inch display with a 2:1 aspect ratio. A peak brightness of 4000 nits ensures excellent visibility in bright environments, while the 1-120Hz LTPO refresh rate promises a seamless user experience. Notably, this is the first foldable to feature an RGB sub-pixel structure.
Build Quality and Performance
The hinge of the Xiaomi 18 Fold feels robust, providing a satisfying snap as it opens and closes. Security features include a fingerprint sensor integrated into the power button, and stereo speaker grilles are strategically placed at the top and bottom. Weighing in at 219g, it feels comparable to traditional flagship smartphones.
When fully unfolded, the device measures 5.02mm thick, slightly more than the Z Fold8, which is a trade-off Xiaomi has made for better battery performance. The 6000mAh battery is designed to outlast competitors in the market, with support for 67W wired charging for quick top-ups.
Camera Capabilities
Photography enthusiasts will appreciate the inclusion of a dedicated telephoto lens, something that the Galaxy Z Fold8 lacks. The Xiaomi 18 Fold offers a portrait-friendly 3.5x zoom on a 50MP sensor, with the capability of nearly lossless 7x captures through sensor cropping.
It also boasts a main 200MP sensor, making it one of the largest in the current foldable segment, complemented by a 50MP ultrawide lens. Collaborating with Leica on lens technology, users can expect high-quality photography that rivals non-folding flagship devices.
Internal Specifications
Under the hood, the Xiaomi 18 Fold is powered by the company’s custom X-Ring 03 chipset, built on a 3nm process featuring an ARM configuration. Although we weren’t able to conduct benchmarks during the demo, the Android 17 interface felt responsive and fluid.
The demo model included 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, with expectations of higher storage variants likely to be offered. While the current version is tailored for the Chinese market, discussions about potential global versions remain open.
Pricing and Availability
Currently, the Xiaomi 18 Fold is available for pre-order in China, priced at 10999 Yuan (approximately $1650/£1200) for the base model. A premium Ceramic version features a silicon nitride ceramic back, offering 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage for 15999 Yuan (around $2400/£1750). Should it be released in Western markets, pricing is expected to be higher.
As Xiaomi seeks to establish itself as a major player in the foldable segment, the 18 Fold may well be the benchmark that competitors will strive to meet.
