The Google Pixel Watch 5: A Comprehensive Review

The Google Pixel Watch 5 has presented its reviewers with a unique challenge. While its physical characteristics remain largely unchanged from its predecessors—maintaining the same sizes, chips, and battery with only minor boosts—its software updates promise to enhance user experience significantly. Notably, the watch introduces ambitious new health features, which build upon the revamped Google Health app and its AI coach, originally launched with the Fitbit Air earlier this year.

However, a key aspect of this review is the frustration surrounding the timing of these updates. The most innovative new features, such as blood pressure tracking, insulin resistance trends, assessments of nightly sleep breathing quality, and wrist-based strength training cues, are expected to become available only next month. Additionally, the breathing emergency detection feature is still awaiting FDA clearance, leaving many features untested at launch. While Europe will see these features available immediately, the delay represents a significant limitation for users eager to assess the watch’s full potential.

This leaves me, the reviewer, in a peculiar position. The promising features appear impressive on paper but assessing their value—especially given the increased price tag of $399.99, a $50 hike from last year’s model—proves challenging without actual user experience or data. Given that some features require a monthly assessment, it may take time before I can accurately evaluate their effectiveness.

Pros and Cons of the Pixel Watch 5

Upon closer inspection, some positive aspects of the Pixel Watch 5 include:

  • Enhanced GPS performance thus far.
  • Offline Gemini functionality is a practical addition.
  • Gesture controls are user-friendly and effective.
  • Although not dramatically revamped, the hardware remains competent.

Conversely, certain downsides include:

  • Mixed results with proactive Gemini suggestions.
  • Emerging health features have yet to launch.
  • A $50 increase in price compared to the previous model.

In addition to the new health features, the Pixel Watch 5 boasts updates such as Wear OS 7, offline Gemini capabilities, improved gesture controls, AI watchfaces, refined bedtime automation, and sharper GPS maps for outdoor exploration. Overall, Google’s vision of creating a seamlessly intuitive experience appears well-conceived, albeit minor iterations rather than groundbreaking advancements. While these enhancements may be exclusive to the Pixel Watch 5 initially, Google’s track record suggests that some could trickle down to older models with upcoming software updates.

Wear OS 7 presents a slight evolution from its predecessor, incorporating familiar gestures like the double pinch and wrist turn more effectively into the user interface. In certain instances, animated indicators demonstrate when gestures can be employed. While the Apple Watch has utilized similar tactics, the integration on the Pixel Watch is commendable and adds an enjoyable dynamic for users.

Proactive Assistance intrigued me, but results varied greatly. During testing, I appreciated when a Google Messages alert from a friend triggered a calendar pop-up thanks to the Gemini system. Yet, in scenarios where I coordinate plans via other means—like Slack or phone calls—the helpful features were noticeably absent. The potential for improvement with future updates seems promising, but currently, the feature’s effectiveness appears inconsistent.

On the brighter side, the offline Gemini feature surpassed my expectations. While I initially hesitated to run with the Pixel 11 Pro, I discovered that my watch could activate workouts using voice commands even without a Bluetooth connection. This quick responsiveness to GPS signals while offline proved to be a strong selling point. Although some latency persisted, the functionality remained practical for everyday activities.

When it comes to GPS capabilities, Google made bold claims regarding the Pixel Watch 5’s potential to outperform competitors like the Apple Watch Ultra 3 and Garmin Fenix 8 Pro. This assertion is supported by utilizing 3D building models, weather patterns, dual-frequency GPS, and various sensors to improve tracking accuracy. Initial tests in challenging environments, such as the busy streets of Manhattan, demonstrated significant improvement in GPS precision, positioning Google’s smartwatch as a contender against high-end Garmin models.

However, it’s essential to consider the Pixel Watch’s design, which doesn’t showcase rugged durability—something outdoor enthusiasts often seek. While an improvement in GPS tracking elevates the device’s appeal, it may not sway dedicated Garmin or Ultra 3 users. Nevertheless, those looking to switch won’t find GPS shortcomings as a barrier anymore.

Lastly, I experimented with AI-generated watchfaces—a feature that acknowledges the demand for personalized designs. However, the effectiveness of AI in creating appealing watchfaces is inconsistent. Some results, such as a bizarre depiction of a manta ray, fell flat, while others based on specific themes demonstrated adequate creativity. My main concern revolves around the limited customization options available.

As for hardware changes, they are minimal; swiping through screens remains snappy, and the 45mm watch continues to deliver 36 to 40 hours of battery life per charge. The watch face charger is still practical, allowing users to easily charge the watch during brief moments, such as while showering.

Conclusion

Currently, I can confidently state that the Pixel Watch 5 stands out as an excellent option for Android users seeking a high-quality smartwatch. Despite the competitive field, especially with the lackluster offerings from brands like OnePlus and Samsung’s recent Galaxy Watch 6, the Pixel Watch 5 remains a strong recommendation for newcomers.

However, for current Pixel Watch users, upgrading may not be necessary at this point. Potential buyers should wait for the health features to be released and evaluated before making a purchasing decision. As an alternative, users might consider the Fitbit Air if sleep tracking is their primary concern.

While it’s disheartening to feel that this review is incomplete due to unavailability of features, I anticipate providing a fuller analysis in October once the remaining health features are fully rolled out.
