WhatsApp’s Upcoming Custom Emoji Reactions: A Game Changer
Emoji reactions are one of the best features of WhatsApp. They let you quickly respond to a message with a simple long-press and tap, providing a handy solution when you’re in a hurry or prefer a quick acknowledgment over a lengthy reply.
However, users have long faced a limitation with WhatsApp’s emoji tray, which has been non-customizable. This constraint meant you were stuck with the default emojis that WhatsApp provided. Fortunately, this may soon change with an upcoming update.
When Did WhatsApp Begin Development on Custom Reactions?
WhatsApp initiated testing for a custom reaction tray on Android last month, and this development is ongoing. Recently, reports from WABetaInfo indicate that the same functionality has appeared in the WhatsApp beta for iOS version 26.32.10.16 via TestFlight. This means iPhone users won’t have to wait long to enjoy this feature as well.

Currently, WhatsApp users can choose from six standard emojis: Thumbs Up, Red Heart, Face with Tears of Joy, Surprised Face, Crying Face, and Folded Hands (👍, ❤️, 😂, 😮, 😢, 🙏), along with their most frequently used emojis. A plus (+) button allows for access to more emojis, but these quick reactions are meant to facilitate seamless communication.
How Will the New Reaction Tray Function?
Once this new feature rolls out, users will be able to go into the app settings and swap out any of the six default emojis for alternatives that better suit their communication style. Screenshots shared by WABetaInfo show the default set next to a completely personalized version. Users can customize as many emojis as they wish, and reverting to the original set will be just as simple if preferences change.

What Are the Limitations?
While the customization feature brings excitement, it’s important to note that not all users will have access. This new capability is part of the second wave of WhatsApp Plus updates, which also includes themes, custom icons, premium stickers, and the option to pin up to 20 chats. As such, access to this feature may be restricted to those who opt for the paid version, which could disappoint many users.
