Google Health’s AI Chatbot Faces User Backlash Over Inaccurate Workouts

Google Health’s AI chatbot is drawing ire from users frustrated with its frequent inaccuracies. Reports indicate that the AI assistant responsible for summarizing health metrics is prone to “hallucinating” workouts that users never actually completed. As complaints flood social media, the timing of this growing issue couldn’t be worse for Google, with new device launches—such as the Google Pixel Watch 5—on the horizon.

One Fitbit user shared their experience on Reddit, stating that their Google Health app generated a workout summary filled with fabricated data. “I have a Fitbit Inspire; it just does not have the capability to do form analysis. All of these stats are made up,” they lamented. This sentiment resonates with many others who have encountered similar discrepancies, particularly with the app’s AI assistant.

The assistant, designed to provide personalized health tips—ranging from exercise routines to dietary suggestions—has been giving wildly incorrect workout summaries. Users report that everyday activities like walking or folding laundry are misclassified as swimming workouts, and imaginary early-morning runs are cited as completed activities. One individual humorously dubbed the AI’s inaccuracies “Nonstop lies from the AI.” As one commenter articulated, “Imagine if a personal trainer lied to your face and then said: ‘Oopsie Daisy! I made those up.’”

The issues extend beyond physical activities. Fitbit users have voiced their frustrations about the app inquiring about cruises they have yet to take, despite having informed the AI otherwise. In another incident, a user removed their Fitbit for a couple of hours and, despite having no heartbeat registered during that time, the app inaccurately concluded they were asleep. “Fun fact: If someone is sleeping and their heartrate is 0, it’s called being dead,” the user wryly commented.

This growing discontent aligns with comprehensive assessments of the Google Health app. Our review of the Fitbit Air highlighted design flaws, calling the app “a bit of a mess” and noting that the user experience is often unintuitive, with useful AI features disrupted by excessive content delivery. As noted, “its constant chirpy summaries and insistence on hiding my data inside walls of text became annoying.”

We reached out to Google for clarification on whether the Google Health app truly does hallucinate user workouts. However, our inquiries have gone unanswered. Speculations have emerged among users, with some suggesting that the AI might be wholly responsible for coding, given the prevalence of anomalies in its behavior. While there’s no definitive evidence to support this theory, it underscores the level of dissatisfaction with the platform.

As it stands, Google Health is facing significant scrutiny, leaving users feeling exasperated and prompting some to terminate their subscriptions. This situation serves as a crucial reminder for tech companies aiming to merge AI with health data: accuracy in handling sensitive information is paramount, as mistakes are seldom forgiven.
