The legal resolution entailed a settlement between Google and Epic, which introduced various new billing options for developers. Additionally, a formal program was set in place, allowing registered third-party app stores to interface seamlessly with Google Play. The guidelines of this program were only finalized last month, allowing for the actual launch of stores like Aptoide.
The new framework, dubbed “Play Catalog Access,” provides qualifying marketplaces the ability to integrate their offerings with the Play Store’s infrastructure while retaining their independence. Notably, Aptoide once had a presence on Google Play during the early years of Android but was subsequently removed entirely as Google’s policies evolved.
