TikTok Takes Action Against AI Deepfakes: New Likeness Detection Tool

AI deepfakes have emerged as a significant challenge for digital creators, raising concerns over identity misuse and content authenticity. In response, TikTok is rolling out a new strategy aimed at empowering creators to protect their identities. Social media consultant Matt Navarra recently discovered that TikTok is piloting an opt-in tool designed to detect AI-generated content that mimics a creator’s likeness, enabling creators to flag such instances directly.

TikTok US spokesperson Zachary Kizer confirmed to The Verge that this feature is currently limited to a small group of creators in the United States. This development puts TikTok in a competitive stance against YouTube, which has already expanded its own likeness detection tool to eligible creators over 18 after months of testing. YouTube has even extended similar protections this year to celebrities and talent agencies, highlighting the growing recognition of the need for such safeguards.

To Fight Deepfakes, TikTok Wants a Scan of Your Real Face

Creators interested in utilizing TikTok’s AI likeness detection tool must first complete a verification process through Jumio, a third-party identity verification service. This process includes submitting a real-time selfie and undergoing an ID check. Kizer clarified that TikTok does not retain ID documents; instead, the facial data is solely employed to match a creator’s likeness and detect unauthorized AI-generated content.

Upon successful verification, TikTok begins scanning for AI-generated content that may feature the creator’s likeness. If the tool detects potential matches, the creator is provided an opportunity to review them and report any accounts or posts that they believe are engaging in impersonation.

Why Does TikTok’s Opt-In Approach Matter Here?

Recent events underline the urgency of addressing AI-generated likenesses, as demonstrated by Meta’s launch of Muse Image, which allowed users to create AI images based on public Instagram photos. This initiative faced immediate backlash and was retracted after just three days due to concerns over user consent and privacy.

In contrast, TikTok’s approach emphasizes creator control: identity verification is the prerequisite, participation is entirely optional, and creators maintain agency over their likeness. With both YouTube and TikTok paving the way for AI likeness detection, it is rapidly becoming an expected feature across major video platforms.

In conclusion, as the landscape of digital content continues to evolve, the implementation of AI likeness detection tools signifies an important shift towards enhancing creator security and trust. With TikTok’s proactive measures, creators can feel more confident navigating the complex terrain of AI-generated content.
