In the second quarter of 2026, Apple distinguished itself in the global PC market, showcasing remarkable growth while the broader industry faced significant declines in computer shipments. According to recent data from IDC, Apple shipped 6.7 million Macs during the quarter, reflecting a commendable 10.1% increase from the 6.1 million units shipped in the same timeframe last year. This surge enabled Apple to elevate its market share from 8.5% to 9.9%.

Meanwhile, Lenovo retained its status as the world’s largest PC manufacturer, despite experiencing a slight drop in shipments from 17 million to 16.6 million units. Strikingly, Lenovo’s market share grew from 23.7% to 24.4%, thanks to the overall market contraction.

HP continued to hold the position of the second-largest PC vendor, shipping 13 million computers during the quarter, down from 14.3 million units a year prior. Consequently, HP’s market share also declined, falling from 19.9% to 19.1%.

Dell secured the third spot after shipping 9.3 million computers, which is a decrease from 9.8 million units in the second quarter of 2025.

Global PC Market Continues to Slow

As the global rankings settled, Apple finished fourth, with Asus rounding out the top five by shipping nearly five million units. Asus recorded a modest growth rate of 0.2%, lifting its market share from 7% to 7.4%.

Despite Apple’s growth, the global PC market overall saw a continued contraction, with worldwide shipments declining by 4.9% year over year. The total for the second quarter of 2026 reached 68.2 million units, down from 71.7 million units in the corresponding period last year.

According to IDC, the ongoing memory shortage has been the primary driver behind this market decline. Increased prices for RAM, SSDs, and other essential components have forced manufacturers to elevate PC prices, ultimately dampening consumer demand.

MacBook Neo Helps Apple Gain Market Share

Apple’s growth trajectory can be largely attributed to the robust demand for its newly launched MacBook Neo, which proved instrumental in increasing the company’s market share even as many competitors faced declining sales.

Interestingly, Apple managed to sidestep much of the pricing pressure during the quarter. The company raised Mac prices toward the end of June, narrowly missing the impact on this quarter’s results. The true effects of these price adjustments may become evident in the upcoming third-quarter report.

Looking forward, IDC anticipates that market conditions will become increasingly challenging in the latter half of 2026. The persistent memory shortage is expected to continue to strain the industry.

Furthermore, IDC has cautioned that PC manufacturers are bracing for further price increases that could extend into 2027, noting that a significant improvement in memory supply is not projected until the end of next year.
