WhatsApp has recently opened up username reservations globally, introducing a feature that allows users to start conversations without sharing their phone numbers. While a phone number is still required to create an account, claiming a username provides an additional layer of privacy and ease of communication.
Securing your desired username takes less than a minute, but it’s essential to come prepared with the necessary details.
What should you know before reserving your username?
Your username must be between 3 and 35 characters and comply with WhatsApp’s policies. Luckily, beyond these requirements, users have an array of options to choose from. Notably, WhatsApp has pre-reserved certain handles for celebrities, verified organizations, and other VIPs, making those usernames unavailable for general users.
If you find yourself struggling to come up with a unique username, WhatsApp’s built-in generator can help suggest some options that are available.

How do you actually reserve your username?
To reserve your username, navigate to Settings > Account > Username on the latest version of WhatsApp. There, you can enter your desired username, and the app will indicate if it’s available. Additionally, the app provides suggestions for usernames that you might not have initially considered.
Importantly, you can use your Instagram or Facebook username as your WhatsApp username as well. Once chosen, the new username will be linked to your WhatsApp account and will become active when the feature rolls out later this year. If the option is not yet visible, don’t worry—WhatsApp is launching this feature region by region and will notify users accordingly.
When the feature is live, anyone attempting to message you for the first time won’t see your phone number, provided you’ve enabled your username. For added security, WhatsApp also allows you to set an optional username key, giving you control over who can reach you.

If you decide later on that you want to change or remove your username, WhatsApp gives you that flexibility as well.
The importance of usernames
The introduction of usernames on WhatsApp aligns with similar features observed in other messaging apps, such as Signal and Telegram, which have prioritized user privacy by enabling phone number-free contact discovery. This addition addresses one of WhatsApp’s longstanding issues regarding privacy. Historically, sharing contact information in the app necessitated revealing one’s phone number, complicating the separation of personal, professional, and public interactions.
With the launch of usernames, WhatsApp aims to enhance user experience and safeguard personal information, ultimately improving how users engage within the platform.
