Apple’s iPhone 18 Model: A Closer Look at Its RAM and AI Features
In a recent report, well-known analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has raised eyebrows regarding the upcoming standard iPhone 18 model, suggesting it may not support some of the groundbreaking Apple Intelligence features set to debut with iOS 27. The anticipated release, scheduled for next spring, has created a buzz in tech circles, particularly related to its specifications.
RAM Specifications and Limitations
Kuo posits that the base iPhone model will come equipped with 9GB of RAM. This figure, while an increase from the 8GB found in current models, still falls short of the previously rumored 12GB, which would enable full support for the advanced Siri AI capabilities expected in iOS 27. According to Kuo’s insights shared on X, the Pro versions of the iPhone will retain their current allocation of 12GB, ensuring they can fully leverage these new features.
In his post, Kuo stated: “iOS 27 will bring tighter system-level integration with Apple Intelligence. My latest industry checks suggest Apple’s lower-end 1H27 iPhones, powered by the A20 chip, will move to 9GB DRAM (1.5GB × 6 dies), up from 8GB (2GB × 4 dies) in the current A19 models, to keep the system running smoothly under AI workloads.” This increase, however, may still leave prospective buyers wanting, especially when compared to the memory capacities necessary for specialized AI features.
Missing Features in the Standard iPhone 18
If the standard iPhone 18 indeed arrives with 9GB of RAM, users may find themselves excluded from some notable AI enhancements. For example, the new Siri will feature more expressive voices designed to create a more natural conversational experience, as well as improved dictation capabilities that convert spoken words into refined text. Apple has confirmed that these innovations will only be available on devices with 12GB of RAM, meaning users of the standard iPhone 18 would miss out.
This marks a significant shift, as 8GB RAM no longer meets the requirements for certain AI functionalities. Given the increasing demands of modern applications, it appears that 9GB may not be sufficient either.
Alternatives and Expectations
While the lack of support for certain advanced features may deter some potential buyers, Apple assures that many other functions will still operate seamlessly on devices with 8GB of RAM. Upcoming additions include a standalone chatbot app, enhanced context-awareness derived from stock applications, improvements to Writing Tools, and integrated Siri functionality in the Camera app. These features promise to enrich user interaction with the device without necessarily relying on extensive RAM.
Despite these setbacks, it’s unlikely that the iPhone 18 will be seen as a failure. Although AI capabilities are rising in significance, the original Siri functionalities have historically not driven significant sales. By keeping the device more affordable with 9GB of RAM, Apple may be strategically positioning the iPhone 18 for a broader audience.
