iQOO has recently introduced the iQOO 15R as the first ‘R’ model in its number lineup specifically designed for the Indian market. This smartphone targets young professionals who are on the lookout for a device that is not only compact and user-friendly but also offers robust performance and exceptional battery life. In our two-week usage of the iQOO 15R, we delve into whether it fulfills these promises.

Design

The iQOO 15R features a vibrant 6.59″ 1,260p AMOLED display, boasting a 144Hz refresh rate. The screen is bordered by slim bezels measuring 1.25mm on the sides, 1.46mm on the top, and 1.77mm on the bottom, allowing for an immersive viewing experience.

A centered punch-hole accommodates the 32MP selfie camera, ensuring that your selfies are crisp and clear.

The iQOO 15R comes equipped with a 3D ultrasonic fingerprint scanner embedded within the display, designed to function effectively even under sweaty conditions. Throughout our testing, the scanner proved to be fast and reliable, situated comfortably away from the bottom bezel for an ergonomic unlocking experience.

iQOO 15R hands-on review

The rear design is highlighted by a squircle-shaped camera island, reminiscent of previous iQOO flagship models. While we would prefer a more innovative design for the camera array, many users might appreciate the familiarity of the layout. The camera section houses two horizontally aligned sensors: a 50MP primary camera and an 8MP ultrawide camera, complemented by an LED flash positioned outside the array.

Importantly, the camera island is designed to be low-profile, thus minimizing wobbling when placed on flat surfaces.

The device is available in two stunning colors: Dark Knight and Triumph Silver. Our review focuses on the Triumph Silver model, which offers a fiberglass back that resists smudging. The design is visually striking, featuring a checkered pattern that catches light at the right angles, making it appealing for casual occasions.

iQOO 15R hands-on review

iQOO’s design choices extend to the flat metal frames, which house well-placed volume rockers and a power button. The bottom edge features a USB-C port, SIM card slot, primary microphone, and speaker grille, while the opposite frame includes a secondary microphone, IR blaster, and an additional speaker outlet.

Weighing in at 206 g and measuring 8.10mm thick, the Triumph Silver version is slightly thicker and heavier than its Dark Knight counterpart. The smartphone is IP68 and IP69-rated, providing additional peace of mind in terms of durability.

Display

The display on the iQOO 15R stands out with its 6.59″ AMOLED panel sporting a resolution of 2,750×1,260 pixels and a pixel density of 459 ppi. Although it supports a 144Hz refresh rate, this feature is limited to gaming scenarios, which may disappoint some users. General usage comes with a 130Hz touch sampling rate.

This smartphone boasts a peak brightness of 5,000 nits, making it exceptionally readable in direct sunlight. The screen’s protection is courtesy of Schott Xensation Alpha glass, further enhancing its durability.

To maximize user experience, iQOO offers various refresh rate settings: Smart adaptation, Standard (60Hz), and High (144Hz). The switch between these options, however, may not allow for a fully optimized experience across all applications, especially in gaming.

Software and Performance

Powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 SoC, the iQOO 15R performs impressively, though it falls short of the flagship iQOO 15’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. The device offers up to 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM and an astounding 512GB of UFS 4.1 storage. The model we reviewed is the top-tier 12GB/512GB version.

This smartphone also integrates the Supercomputing Chip Q2, aimed at facilitating low-latency gaming and enhanced image processing. Despite claims of 1.5K Game Super functionality, our in-game experiences did not fully reflect these capabilities.

iQOO 15R hands-on review

Running on Android 16 with OriginOS 6, the iQOO 15R promises four years of OS upgrades and six years of security updates, with a regular monthly schedule for the first four years.

In general usage, the device demonstrates smooth performance, even during extended gaming sessions. It did exhibit some heat, but this did not hinder functionality or user satisfaction.

Camera

The iQOO 15R’s camera system includes a striking 32MP front camera, capable of shooting 4K video at 60 FPS, while the rear features a dual setup – a 50MP primary and an 8MP ultrawide camera.

While it may not outperform the flagship iQOO 15’s camera, the iQOO 15R delivers satisfying daytime and low-light photos suitable for social media. The quality is commendable given its price range.

iQOO 15R hands-on review

Captured in daylight, the ultrawide camera and primary camera deliver decent quality images, with details preserved under ordinary lighting conditions.

Battery

Equipped with a robust 7,600 mAh battery, the iQOO 15R supports 100W wired and 7.5W reverse charging. Although our standardized battery tests were unattainable, anecdotal evidence suggests that this device comfortably lasts a day with moderate usage, even when utilizing 5G data and battery-intensive features.

iQOO 15R hands-on review

While expected charging times indicated 50% in 33 minutes and 100% in 63 minutes, our testing showed the iQOO 15R charging to full in just over 80 minutes, which may vary based on individual usage and environmental factors.

Conclusion

The iQOO 15R meets its promise as a compact smartphone ideal for professionals seeking efficient usability, powerful performance, and impressive battery life. With its user-friendly design, bright display, and adequate camera features, it stands as a commendable option for the target demographic.

iQOO 15R hands-on review

Available in Dark Knight and Triumph Silver, the iQOO 15R comes in three memory variants priced at INR 44,999, INR 47,999, and INR 52,999 respectively. Given its specifications and performance, we confidently recommend the iQOO 15R.
