“Huawei GT Runner 2: Ultimate Running Watch Comparison with Garmin”

Huawei has recently launched what it claims is its best running watch to date, the Huawei Watch GT Runner 2. This smartwatch is designed to compete head-to-head with industry leaders like Apple and Garmin.

The Watch GT Runner 2 boasts a wide array of features, including Huawei’s highly accurate TruSense heart rate sensor and algorithm. Additionally, it offers an intelligent Marathon Mode, which provides tailored training advice, along with innovative route design capabilities similar to those found in Garmin and Coros devices. A major engineering feat of this watch is its redesigned 3D antenna array, which enhances GPS accuracy.

The 3D antenna is positioned near the top of the bezel. Huawei asserts this design enables ‘precise tracking and positioning even in demanding environments like tunnels or shaded areas’. According to Huawei, this feature makes their watch more accurate than some of the best offerings from Garmin. However, given that most of the performance tests originate from Huawei itself, caution is advised when interpreting these claims.

In terms of aesthetics and comfort, the watch is impressive. It includes a redesigned digital crown positioned similarly to the Coros Pace 4, alongside an additional physical button on the same side. Users can also choose from a variety of straps; the fabric option is particularly appealing. The watch is available in three color choices: Midnight Black, Dusk Blue, and Dawn Orange.

Despite being unable to sell its products in the United States, Huawei is serious about establishing its reputation in the running watch market. Notably, marathon world record-holder Eliud Kipchoge has joined as a brand ambassador. A representative from Huawei highlighted that Kipchoge’s team is involved in testing the brand’s wearable technology and provides consistent feedback. The watch now includes Curve Pay, addressing previous payment functionality limitations.

The Huawei Watch GT Runner 2 is retailing at £349.99 in the UK, which translates to around $475 / AU$665.

Versus Garmin

In a recent comparison, I tested the GT Runner 2 against my personal Garmin Epix Pro over a quick 5.4km route. For a more comprehensive review, I plan to pit it against the Apple Watch Ultra 3 as well as a Polar H10 heart rate monitor. While my Garmin Epix Pro may not be the latest model, it is equipped with the up-to-date Elevate V5 heart rate sensor, and it has shown accurate GPS readings when compared to the Apple Watch.

During my initial test run, the Huawei Watch GT Runner 2 felt lightweight and sported a bright AMOLED screen that remained visible even under harsh winter sunlight. The results were promising, with only 30 meters’ variation in distance and an 8 bpm difference in average heart rate between the two devices. A difference of 10 bpm or less is generally considered not statistically significant, making Huawei’s performance comparable to industry benchmarks for the average runner.
