Bungie is taking a firm stance against cheaters in its highly anticipated multiplayer shooter, Marathon. In a recent blog post detailing the game’s networking and security systems, the studio made it clear that anyone caught cheating will face a permanent ban from the game—without any chance for redemption.

To combat cheating effectively, Bungie has rebuilt Marathon’s security stack from the ground up. The game will feature authoritative dedicated servers that manage crucial gameplay actions, such as combat, looting, and movement. This setup prevents player devices from tampering with game states to gain an unfair advantage. Players will also encounter systems like Fog of War, which limit information sharing and mitigate common cheats like wall hacks and loot revealers.

True to its commitment, Bungie has stated, “Anyone found to be cheating or developing cheats will be permanently banned from playing Marathon forever, no second chances.” This stringent zero-tolerance policy sets it apart from other games, where multiple infractions might lead to escalating penalties.

While acknowledging that no anti-cheat system is flawless, Bungie promises to maintain an appeals process for players who feel they’ve been wrongfully flagged. Additionally, the company will rely on analytics to monitor gameplay for unusual patterns that might suggest cheating.

As the “Server Slam” open preview weekend approaches and the official release date looms next month, players will soon have the opportunity to test these security features firsthand.

Set in the world of Tau Ceti IV, Marathon is a competitive extraction shooter where players hunt for loot while battling opponents and environmental threats. After what seemed like a lengthy delay, the game now has confirmed release details and full cross-platform support across consoles and PC.
