Smartwatch users especially value one aspect: convenience. They seek an effortless way to access key information, utilize features from their favorite apps, and control other devices directly from their wrist. Among the various options available, Google’s Pixel Watch series stands out as one of the best. However, it has long lagged behind competitors like Apple and Samsung in offering intuitive, non-touch gestures. Recent developments indicate that this gap may soon close, as Google is reportedly working on a range of hands-free gestures for the Google Pixel Watch devices.

Recent code discoveries by Android Authority within the latest Pixel Watch app update suggest that Google is preparing a significant overhaul of its interaction model. The company is likely drawing inspiration from direct competitors while also reviving a beloved feature from the early days of Android Wear. The primary goal is to enhance user experience by providing meaningful ways to control their watch when their hands are occupied.

Hands-free gestures are coming to Google Pixel Watch

The most noteworthy addition to the Pixel Watch is set to be the Double Pinch gesture. This gesture allows users to perform various actions using a subtle finger movement, akin to gesture systems that have proven effective on competing smartwatches.

Code snippets reveal that this double pinch gesture will serve as a multipurpose tool. Users will be able to answer calls, engage with notifications, take photos, and more—all with just this single, simple movement. This functionality is particularly advantageous in scenarios where touching the screen is impractical, such as while carrying groceries, exercising, or cooking. Therefore, its introduction would represent a significant innovative leap for eligible Pixel smartwatches.

In addition to the new gesture, Google is also attentive to its long-time users by reintroducing a classic feature: Wrist Turn gestures. Previously included in early versions of Android Wear, these gestures were phased out during the platform’s transition to Wear OS 3. The company appears poised to bring back the most reliable aspects of this system. The refreshed wrist-turn functionality will enable users to manage simple yet useful tasks, including silencing calls or dismissing notifications with a quick flick of the wrist.

A major step forward

The upcoming integration of both the double pinch and wrist turn gestures is set to be a significant win for Pixel Watch users. Once implemented, these gestures will elevate the smartwatch experience by making it feel like a natural extension of the user’s body. This addition will complement existing convenient features, such as the ‘Raise to Talk’ integration with Gemini, all aimed at reducing the friction involved in managing daily alerts and media controls.

Currently, the new Google Pixel Watch gestures are visible only in leaked code and have not yet been activated for users. However, optimism remains high that these features will be rolled out to the wider user base soon.
