XREAL Sues Viture Over Controversial AR Glasses Technology

In an escalating legal battle over emerging smart glasses technology, XREAL has filed a new lawsuit against rival Viture in the United States. This follows a similar legal action initiated in Germany last year, indicating that tensions between the two companies are far from resolved. XREAL accuses Viture of utilizing its patented technologies without authorization for its XR glasses.

XREAL Claims Viture Stole Its Smart Glasses Technology in a New Lawsuit

The recent lawsuit, lodged in a U.S. court, specifically references U.S. Patent No. 11,988,839, which portrays how images are displayed within smart glasses. XREAL particularly targets Viture’s Pro XR glasses for alleged infringement, while also suggesting that other models may be implicated. The company asserts that the similarities in design and technical features between the two brands surpass industry norms, which raises serious questions about intellectual property ethics in this rapidly evolving market.

XREAL insists that the distinctive similarities point to their original patented concepts, highlighting the urgency of their legal action as the XR (extended reality) market is projected to soar to a valuation of nearly $700 billion by 2035. This research underscores the significance of protecting innovative technologies in an increasingly competitive field.

Viture Has Not Shared Its Views or Position on the Matter Yet

As of now, Viture has not publicly commented on the ongoing lawsuit. According to technology analyst Anshel Sag from Moor Insights & Strategy, the patent in question was initially filed by XREAL in 2018 and was granted official status in 2024. Sag clarifies that XREAL is the sole patent holder in both the U.S. and Germany, noting that Viture does not possess any comparable patents.

Founded in Beijing, both companies operate in the cutting-edge arena of augmented reality technologies. XREAL, which launched in 2017 and was formerly known as Nreal until rebranding in 2023, has already faced legal challenges in the past. In 2019, they were sued by Magic Leap under similar accusations; however, that case was ultimately dismissed in U.S. courts due to insufficient evidence. Now, as the focus shifts to the current lawsuit, industry stakeholders and consumers alike will be awaiting the court’s ruling with significant interest.
