Volvo has unveiled its latest all-electric mid-size SUV, the EX60, which it describes as a “game-changer” in its rapidly expanding electric lineup. This new EV promises impressive range, swift charging capabilities, integration with Google’s Gemini AI, and a premium audio experience that positions it competitively alongside models like the Tesla Model Y and the BMW iX3.
The EX60 fills the gap between the smaller EX40 and the larger three-row EX90 within Volvo’s global lineup. Notably, it replaces the internal combustion engine (ICE)-powered XC60, marking a significant step towards the automaker’s fully electric future.
Volvo’s Most Important Electric SUV Yet
Leveraging the company’s new SPA3 800-volt electric architecture, the EX60 employs advanced manufacturing techniques such as mega casting and cell-to-body battery integration. These innovations not only reduce weight but also enhance overall efficiency.
The EX60 is offered in three distinct trim levels: P6 (rear-wheel-drive), P10 (all-wheel-drive with dual motors), and P12 (all-wheel-drive with dual motors). The top-tier EX60 P12 boasts a substantial 117 kWh battery pack, providing an EPA-estimated range of up to 400 miles, and up to 502 miles according to the WLTP standard. This trim is also the most powerful, generating up to 670 horsepower (500 kW) and 583 lb-ft of torque, propelling it from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.8 seconds.
The P10 variant houses a 95 kWh battery capable of delivering approximately 320 miles of range, while the P6 is equipped with an 83 kWh battery that aims for around 310 miles. Notably, all trims support 400 kW super-fast charging, allowing the battery to charge from 10 to 80% in as little as 19 minutes. In practical terms, this means drivers can gain about 173 miles of range in just 10 minutes of charging.
Advanced Technology and Features
Inside, the EX60 marks a first for Volvo by integrating Google’s Gemini AI voice assistant within its infotainment system. This feature allows for natural, conversational interaction for navigation, media control, and various other vehicle functionalities. The interior design takes inspiration from Scandinavian aesthetics, focusing on comfort and an inviting atmosphere.
In terms of audio capabilities, the EX60 shines with an impressive 28-speaker Bowers & Wilkins audio system. This premium setup not only delivers exceptional sound quality but also features Apple Music pre-installed and supports Dolby Atmos. Additional safety features include Volvo’s crash protection, powered by the HuginCore engine, and an extensive 10-year warranty on the battery.
While Volvo plans to commence production of the EX60 P6 and P10 in Sweden by late spring, U.S. consumers can expect deliveries in the summer. The higher-spec P12 trim will follow at a later date. Although pricing details have yet to be confirmed, the mid-level P10 trim is expected to start around $60,000, making it a strong contender in the tech-savvy mid-size electric SUV market. The P12 trim may carry a slightly higher price tag due to its enhanced features.
