Stoker (2013)

One of director Park Chan-wook’s most explicit riffs on Alfred Hitchcock, Stoker tells the story of a young girl whose world is upended after her father dies in a car accident. When her uncle Charlie moves in, she becomes increasingly fascinated by him, even though she didn’t know he existed before they first met.
Stoker is a delicate, tense movie featuring three incredible central performances from Nicole Kidman, Mia Wasikowska, and Matthew Goode. Park Chan-wook’s skill as a director also ensures that, while this is definitely a Hitchcock riff, it’s also never derivative. Park has a style all his own.

The Night of the Hunter (1955)

One of the most stylish directorial debuts in history, The Night of the Hunter tells the story of a religious fanatic and serial killer who becomes obsessed with finding $10,000 that the widow of his cellmate is in possession of. As he goes to increasingly terrible lengths to find the money, the two children are forced to confront an evil that seems to be almost supernatural in its unflinchingness.
Anchored by a remarkable turn from Robert Mitchum and some incredible cinematography and art direction, The Night of the Hunter has endured as an elemental tale of good and evil for decades.

Casino (1995)
Universal Pictures
Although often viewed as Martin Scorsese’s sideways sequel to Goodfellas, Casino is worthy of recognition. The film tells the story of how the mafia became a dominant player in Las Vegas, only to find itself competing with “honest” businessmen. Casino is as epic in scope and scale as Goodfellas, but the film’s focus is fundamentally different from the corruption at the heart of Goodfellas.
While it doesn’t have the kind of iconic moments that have come to define Goodfellas, Casino is a reminder that every mob movie Scorsese has ever made feels like a distinct exploration of how masculinity has destroyed America.
