SpaceX’s Starlink Surpasses 10,000 Satellites Launched
On Sunday, SpaceX achieved a significant milestone by launching 56 additional Starlink satellites aboard separate Falcon 9 rockets. This event marks the company’s 132nd launch of the Falcon 9 in 2025, tying the previous annual launch record with over two full months remaining in the year.
The Growing Starlink Constellation
With the latest launches, SpaceX has surpassed the threshold of 10,000 satellites deployed into low Earth orbit. According to calculations by satellite tracker Jonathan McDowell, approximately 8,608 of these satellites are currently operational. The Starlink satellites are designed to function for around five years before being intentionally de-orbited, allowing them to burn up upon re-entry into the atmosphere.
Future Plans and Industry Challenges
SpaceX has received approval to launch a total of 12,000 satellites, with plans extending to over 30,000 to provide fast and low-latency internet across the globe. However, the expansion of mega-constellations poses concerns within the aerospace community. Competing projects, including Amazon’s Project Kuiper and various initiatives from Europe and China, are in development, prompting discussions around the risks of overcrowding in space.
