If you’ve ever scrolled through the PlayStation Store and stumbled across some games with an oddly familiar title, characters, or graphics, but only with cheap reskins and almost no originality, Sony has finally heard you.
The company has quietly wiped the entire catalogs of three publishers from the PlayStation Store: GoGame Console Publisher, VRCForge Studios, and Welding Byte. The removals were first spotted on PSNProfiles and included popular titles such as *Urban Driver Simulator*, *Water Blast Shooter – Wet Gun*, and *Supermarket CEO Simulator* (via EuroGamer).

What Is Shovelware Anyway?
Shovelware is an umbrella term for games produced with minimal effort, often cloning trending titles to ride their popularity, and those designed to hand players easy achievements or Trophy unlocks. These titles are akin to cheap copies that somehow made their way onto the PlayStation Store by exploiting its relatively open submission process.
To clean up its digital storefront and provide PlayStation owners with a refined experience, this latest update is a significant step. Interestingly, Sony has already removed several publishers in recent months, indicating a more rigorous approach to content quality.
The fourth-largest publisher on the PlayStation Store (by volume), which boasted over a thousand titles, was entirely removed in January 2026. This was followed by removals of CHI Laba and Nostra Games in March. The April removal comes less than two weeks after the March purge.

Is Sony’s Crackdown Actually Working?
Partially. These removals are said to be connected to the Shared Commitment to Safer Gaming, a collaborative initiative among three major console players: Sony, Xbox, and Nintendo. This institutional backing lends greater credibility to Sony’s latest efforts compared to previous isolated actions.
However, on the ground in the PlayStation Store, the problem persists. Sony’s approach appears to be reactive, meaning they remove flagged content rather than preemptively filtering it before it appears on the platform. Additionally, many of the banned games reappear under different names, suggesting a cat-and-mouse game continues.
Until submission standards tighten, it may be challenging for Sony to maintain the integrity of its store. In my opinion, shifting from a reactive delisting model to proactive submission gatekeeping could be beneficial. Despite these challenges, the recent crackdown is a commendable step forward.
