Snapdragon X2 Elite Extreme: A Game Changer in Performance Benchmarks

In the ongoing debate between x86 and ARM architectures, the release of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X2 Elite Extreme is stirring the pot. Early benchmarks suggest that this new chip is not just a participant but a dominator, outperforming the most recent CPUs from both AMD and Intel in single-core and multi-core performance metrics.

Benchmark Results: A Comparative Analysis

Initial testing yields impressive results from Geekbench 6.5, showcasing the Snapdragon X2 Elite Extreme’s prowess against formidable competitors like the AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 and the Intel Core Ultra 7 258V. While some comparisons stem from Geekbench 6.1, they remain relevant for context.

In addition to Geekbench, the X2 Elite Extreme also excels in Cinebench 2024. This chip boasts an innovative 18-core CPU architecture—comprising 12 Prime cores that operate at 4.4GHz (with boosts up to 5.0GHz under optimal thermal conditions) and six Performance cores clocking at 3.6GHz without boost capabilities.

Chip Variants and Performance Expectations

Qualcomm unveiled three variations within the X2 generation: the X2 Elite Extreme (96), X2 Elite (88), and X2 Elite (80). Each variant carries distinct CPU, GPU, and cache configurations, yet they feature a shared NPU (Neural Processing Unit) capability rated at 80 TOPS.

During a recent launch event, only the elite variant, the X2 Elite Extreme, was made available for testing, with all evaluations conducted under Qualcomm’s oversight. Notably, these tests were performed with devices plugged into a power source, which Qualcomm claims does not compromise performance compared to battery operation.

Memory and Upgrade Flexibility

The Snapdragon X2 Elite Extreme supports up to 48GB of DDR5X RAM, though it remains unclear whether this is integrated soldered RAM or external RAM. In contrast, the other two elite models only utilize external RAM options, with an impressive capacity of up to 128GB. This configuration has its trade-offs: soldered RAM delivers speed while external slots allow for user upgrades.

GPU Performance: A Leap Forward

With the Adreno X2-90 GPU clocking in at a maximum of 1.85GHz, the Snapdragon X2 Elite Extreme sets new standards in graphical capabilities. According to tests conducted in 3DMark Steel Nomad Light, the Snapdragon outperforms both Intel’s iGPU (Arc 140V) and AMD’s iGPU (Radeon 890M) by a staggering 80%. Compared to its predecessor, the performance boost is a remarkable 2.6x.

AI Capabilities and Future Prospects

As AI functionality becomes a priority for tech companies, the Snapdragon X2 Elite Extreme’s NPU, now rated at 80 TOPS (INT8), is essential for this paradigm shift. This rating nearly triples the performance of its predecessor and significantly surpasses Intel’s AI acceleration capabilities.

The first devices equipped with Snapdragon X2 Elite chips are expected to debut in Spring 2026. Anticipation is building for future benchmarks that may shed light on the performance of the two non-Extreme variants as well.
