The Evolution of Tri-Fold Technology: Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold vs. Huawei Mate XT Ultimate

Earlier this year, a poll on the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate revealed significant consumer interest in tri-fold technology. The key takeaways from the poll indicated that 26.4% of respondents wanted a more affordable tri-fold option, 22.1% desired the Mate XT Ultimate itself, and 16.7% preferred a tri-fold smartphone but not from Huawei. This week, Samsung has seemingly addressed the concerns of those consumers with the release of the Galaxy Z TriFold.

New Offerings from Samsung

The Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold is set to hit the market next week, though details are still emerging, particularly surrounding its pricing. Currently, the Korean price is approximately 40% higher than the Z Fold7, which could indicate a global price that will fall under Huawei’s steep €3,500 for the Mate XT Ultimate, particularly for a 1TB model.

Design and Features

The design of the Galaxy Z TriFold is particularly intriguing. Essentially a Z Fold7 with an additional layer, the device measures 12.9mm when closed and weighs 309g. Notably, the cover screen remains at 6.5 inches, while inside, the device unfolds to display a 10.0-inch tablet-sized screen with a 15:11 aspect ratio. This wider format can enhance experiences in gaming and video playback.

Samsung has made design choices to protect the phone’s folding mechanism. Unlike the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate, which leaves one-third of its display exposed, the TriFold houses its hinge on the exterior, keeping the vulnerable screen inside. This consideration adds to the device’s durability.

Battery and Performance Metrics

The Galaxy Z TriFold boasts the largest battery ever in a Samsung flagship smartphone, at 5,600mAh. This represents a significant increase over the 4,400mAh battery found in the Z Fold7. Additionally, the device supports 45W fast charging, while the Huawei tri-fold matches with a 5,600mAh battery but provides even faster 66W wired charging.

In terms of performance, the TriFold shares several key features with the Z Fold7, including the same Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset and a camera array that includes a 200MP wide camera, a 10MP telephoto camera, and a 12MP ultra-wide camera along with a punch-hole selfie camera.

The Competitive Landscape

The tri-fold smartphone segment is still emergent, with few options available to consumers. Currently, the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate and its slightly upgraded variant, the XTs Ultimate, are major competitors in this space. These devices run on HarmonyOS, unlike the Galaxy Z TriFold, which continues to utilize the popular Android operating system.

Future of Tri-Fold Technology

As the Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold approaches its release, it raises important questions about the future of tri-fold smartphones. Is this the next evolution of mobile technology, or is it merely a temporary gimmick? Pricing remains a crucial factor, particularly for those who desire innovative designs but are budget-conscious.

What are your thoughts on the Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold? Do you believe this could be your next phone, or do you think the high price tag will deter potential buyers?
