Directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller have delivered one of the must-see movies of 2026 with the new sci-fi comedy, Project Hail Mary. Based on the novel by Andy Weir, the film begins with Dr. Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling) waking on a spaceship with no memory of who he is. He eventually recalls that he was sent into space to help prevent the Sun and humanity from dying, and he befriends a “crab-rock” alien (James Ortiz) on a similar quest.
With a talented cast and crew, Project Hail Mary delivers a massive, majestic blockbuster that blends a thrilling alien adventure with heartfelt human drama. Fans of classic sci-fi movies such as The Martian, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and Interstellar will likely appreciate this film, which has already established itself as a modern masterpiece.
Ryan Gosling and Rocky are a dynamic duo

Similar to The Martian, another Andy Weir book adaptation, Project Hail Mary depicts a comedic everyman’s journey of survival in space. Unlike Matt Damon’s character in the former, Ryan Gosling’s Grace seems like the last person who should be an astronaut. From the very beginning, Gosling convincingly portrays a character that feels woefully out of his element as he is called to save humanity.
Gosling has previously led thrilling sci-fi films like Blade Runner 2049 and First Man. However, Grace diverges from those cool, confident heroes, revealing a bumbling fool reminiscent of Gosling’s role in The Nice Guys, showcasing his wide range as an actor.

Project Hail Mary introduces a new alien icon in Rocky, whose chemistry with Grace is electric. Rocky arrives on Grace’s ship bringing a sense of excitement and curiosity, reminiscent of a playful dog, as the two navigate their shared challenges. His rapid-fire dialogue provides comedic relief, echoing earlier characters from The Mitchells vs. The Machines. Rocky’s loyalty and care for Grace convey a deep bond that resonates throughout the film, making him a character woven with warmth.

Phil Lord and Christopher Miller shared the director’s chair for Project Hail Mary, marking their first collaboration since briefly helming 2018’s Solo: A Star Wars Story. Although it’s been a while since they directed a feature film, their clever storytelling is evident in the animated Spider-Man movies, where quirky, self-referential humor thrives.
Much like their previous works, Project Hail Mary pays homage to classics like Apollo 13, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and 2001. Rather than aiming for groundbreaking innovation, the film offers a fresh, delightful experience; after all, it’s not everyday audiences witness Ryan Gosling singing karaoke on a holodeck alongside an alien.
“One thing about this story that’s unique is that a lot of films are about someone who feels at home on Earth, wakes up in space, and they feel lonely. This is a movie about someone who feels lonely on Earth. They go to space and find a friend,” Lord shared with BFI. The directors aimed to make space feel inviting and warm, rather than cold and isolating.

Behind Grace’s star-faring adventure lies a portrait of a man discovering his courage after grappling with self-doubt. He may be unconventional, but as he learns to believe in himself, his journey reflects a universal narrative about the importance of friendship and bravery.
However, credit for the film’s witty, heartfelt writing goes to Oscar-nominated screenwriter Drew Goddard, known for films like Cloverfield and The Martian. His intricate storytelling helps draw out the humor and humanity in Grace and Rocky’s relationship.
“In Project Hail Mary, the main character is a fish out of water,” Goddard explained to Variety. “You need it to feel rough around the edges, even a little sloppy. We don’t want him to be a perfect astronaut. Phil and Chris excel at finding humanity in these quirky characters, which is what this film required.”
A spectacular feat of filmmaking

In Project Hail Mary, Lord and Miller continue their legacy of blending comedic narratives with genuine heart. The film showcases stunning visuals captured by Greig Fraser, a renowned cinematographer celebrated for his work on Rogue One, The Batman, and Dune: Part One and Part Two. Fraser’s artistry shines as he portrays the beauty and enormity of space through captivating scenes, including Grace’s mesmerizing experience harvesting Astrophage.
The film stands out particularly as it made use of practical effects rather than green or blue screens, enabling audiences to fully immerse themselves in the visuals. Accompanying the stunning cinematography is a unique score by composer Daniel Pemberton, who successfully intertwines different musical styles to enhance the viewing experience. The result? An unforgettable journey through space paired with eclectic musical moments.
With fascinating characters, sharp writing, and breathtaking visuals, Project Hail Mary has captivated audiences this year. Although more exciting sci-fi films such as Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Dune: Part Three, and Avengers: Doomsday are lined up for release, it’s clear that Project Hail Mary has secured its status as one of the year’s best blockbusters.
