Google’s Pixel 10 Pro Fold represents a significant step forward from its predecessor, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. With notable enhancements such as a world-first IP68 rating, magnetic Qi2 charging, improved display brightness, and a larger battery capacity, this foldable phone makes quite the statement. However, it’s important to note that while the internal specifications are indeed improved, the size and shape remain largely unchanged. In fact, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is slightly heavier and a fraction thicker than its predecessor.
One of the standout features of the Pixel 9 Pro Fold was its impressively thin and lightweight design, which set a benchmark in the foldable phone market. However, as competition heats up among brands like Oppo, Honor, and Samsung, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold finds itself on the thicker end of the spectrum when compared to its rivals. Samsung, for example, has been deliberately pushing the envelope to claim the title of “world’s thinnest foldable,” leaving Google to play catch-up.
In terms of dimensions, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is 5.2mm thick when open and a slightly heftier 10.8mm when closed, not counting the camera. While this thickness is still competitive, it lacks the finesse exhibited by some contemporaries. For instance, Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 7 is just 8.9mm thick when closed, providing a tangible edge in portability. In practical terms, rivals like the Honor Magic V5 set the bar even higher, achieving a remarkable thickness of just 8.8mm.
Over my week with the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, I found its size did not detract from the experience, even when compared to impressively thin competitors. While the Pixel may seem thick on paper, in daily use it’s noticeable but not bothersome. The design feels robust, and despite its additional thickness, it remains comfortable to handle and carry, especially when used with the official Pixelsnap case.
What is concerning is its weight; at 258g, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is about 50g heavier than its main competitor, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7. This added weight can become uncomfortable, particularly during prolonged use or when held for extended periods. It’s crucial for consumers to weigh this factor when considering the device.
When it comes to battery life, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold excels with a robust 5,015mAh capacity, outperforming the Z Fold 7’s 4,400mAh. I’ve experienced minimal battery anxiety, thanks in large part to this substantial capacity, which allows for plenty of usage without the constant need to charge. However, it’s worth mentioning that the battery technology in other thinner models has advanced, enabling them to create energy-dense batteries that are still lighter.
Ultimately, my initial impressions of the Pixel 10 Pro Fold have shifted positively. While I once viewed its design as outdated before its release, my week of usage has shown me that thicker phones do not always equate to inferior experiences. The progressive move towards thinner devices will continue, but Google has carved a solid niche for itself with the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, even if it doesn’t quite lead the pack yet in slimness. The device effectively demonstrates that innovation can exist alongside practicality.
