Peloton Recalls 833,000 Bike Plus Units Due to Safety Concerns
Peloton is set to recall approximately 833,000 of its original Bike Plus machines, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). This recall is prompted by reports indicating that the seat post can unexpectedly break and detach during operation. To date, Peloton has received three reports of the seat post malfunction, as well as two reports of injuries sustained from falls.
Details on Affected Models
The impacted Bike Plus units were sold between January 2020 and April 2025, with manufacturing occurring in Taiwan from 2019 to 2022. These bikes were available directly from Peloton, as well as through third-party retailers such as Dick’s Sporting Goods, eBay, and Amazon. Consumers can identify whether their Bike Plus is affected by checking for the model number PL02 and serial numbers commencing with “T.”
Safety First: Peloton’s Response
In response to the safety issues, Peloton is providing a free, redesigned seat post that owners can easily install themselves. Marcio Oliveira, Peloton’s senior vice president of Global Hardware Operations and Product Safety, stated, “The integrity of our products and our Members’ well-being are our top priorities. We are taking this opportunity to make replacement seat posts available to all affected Bike Plus users and we encourage them to contact us to receive the redesigned seat post as soon as possible.”
A Look Back: Previous Recall
This is not Peloton’s first recall concerning bike seat posts. In 2023, the company recalled its original Bike model, affecting 2 million units, with 35 reported breakages and 13 injuries linked to the faulty seat posts. While the original Bike and Bike Plus are similar, they feature distinct seat post designs, which has resulted in separate recall concerns.
Timing of the Recall
The timing of this recall is particularly delicate for Peloton, as the company is scheduled to announce its earnings later today at 5PM ET. This quarter’s financial results are especially significant, being the first following an ambitious hardware refresh and the introduction of a new AI-driven fitness coaching feature, which Peloton hopes will enhance user engagement and satisfaction.
