Why You Should Consider a Handheld Gaming PC Over Traditional Laptops
As a PC gamer for over 30 years, I understand that gaming can be quite expensive. With RAM prices increasing and their impact on the costs of gaming laptops and gaming PCs, the financial barrier to entry is growing. Given this situation, I’ve decided to shift my advice: rather than investing in a gaming laptop or PC at present, consider opting for a handheld gaming PC.
Since my first experience with the Steam Deck, which initiated this exciting category of gaming devices, my affection for handheld gaming PCs has only deepened. Their portability and design allow for easy gaming anywhere you desire. While they may not boast the same power as high-end gaming rigs equipped with state-of-the-art GPUs, they deliver impressive performance even in demanding modern games.

Some games, like the captivating Hades II, feel genuinely more engaging on handheld gaming PCs with their integrated controllers, rather than through a mouse and keyboard—a statement I’m hesitant to make as a longtime PC gamer.

Handheld gaming PCs also offer exceptional value, especially to those on a budget. The entry-level model of the Steam Deck is priced at $399, a price point rarely matched by gaming laptops. The recently released Steam Deck OLED not only enhances your visual experience with an impressive screen but also introduces a user-friendly console-like environment via its SteamOS.
For those seeking a more powerful handheld experience, the Lenovo Legion Go S presents itself as an excellent option. It features two versions—one running SteamOS and the other Windows 11—allowing for flexibility in your gaming preferences.
More robust handheld gaming PCs such as the Asus ROG Xbox Ally provide enhanced gaming performance, making it a worthwhile investment, particularly for existing owners of Microsoft’s home consoles.
If you’re already versed in the world of PC gaming, these handheld devices allow you access to your existing game library without requiring you to repurchase titles. This advantage amplifies their value, especially in comparison to consoles like the Nintendo Switch 2. Though the Steam Deck functions best with games purchased through the Steam store, alternative options exist for sourcing games from other retailers, such as the Epic Games Store. Handhelds like the MSI Claw A1M and the Lenovo Legion Go run Windows 11, further enhancing flexibility by enabling you to install most PC games just as you would on a gaming laptop.
