The disparity between aspiration and accomplishment isn’t unique to large organizations. If we consider what our ambitions were as children, they often shift dramatically as we grow. To illustrate this, I might have claimed a dream of becoming the first NBA player to land on Mars at three years old. But dreams evolve, sometimes unexpectedly.
With the launch of its latest product, Sora 2—an AI-driven video social network—OpenAI appears to have set a new benchmark for the gap between its stated mission and its actual operations.
The Dangers of Sora 2
Sora 2 combines the addictive elements of AI-generated content with the most detrimental aspects of modern media: a near-endless scroll of appealing but content-light videos. This aligns uncomfortably with the declining attention spans of audiences everywhere.

OpenAI’s design choices reportedly preset the sharing of copyrighted material as default, placing responsibility on rights holders to demand content removal—an approach that opens the door to abuse.
The ability to upload personal images into AI-generated videos is another concern, leading to potential misuse through deepfake technology that can create realistic yet misleading representations. In an era where fake news and misinformation proliferate, this function poses alarming risks, especially when people could easily share manipulated video content without verification.
As the U.S. grapples with the implications of AI-generated media, OpenAI stands accused of prioritizing its profitability—especially considering its recent valuation surpassing $500 billion—over its core mission to benefit society.
In a blog post, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman heralded Sora 2 as a potential “ChatGPT for creativity,” capable of generating an intense quantity of artistic content. This level of automation, however, raises questions about the quality and authenticity of creativity.
Perhaps more troubling is how Sora 2 diverts attention from significant advancements in AI that could genuinely enhance lives. As new startups emerge focused on using AI to advance scientific discovery, the threat remains that flashy distractions like Sora 2 will overshadow meaningful progress.
Ultimately, the burden lies with the user to navigate the choices presented in AI technology. A call to action emerges: insist on demanding quality over quantity and reject easily digestible yet trivial offerings.
Currently, Sora 2 holds strong positions on app charts, illustrating the complexity of public interest and societal impact.
