Meta Launches Innovative Smart Glasses at Connect Keynote
At its recent Connect keynote, Meta unveiled its latest offering in wearable technology: the Meta Ray-Ban Display, also referred to as Hypernova. Priced at $799.99, these high-end smart glasses promise to elevate the way we interact with our mobile devices through an integrated in-lens display.
Features and Functionality
The Meta Ray-Ban Display is designed for convenience, allowing users to control the display using wrist-based gestures via the newly introduced Meta Neural Band. This connectivity to your smartphone enables a seamless experience, displaying everything from text messages and Instagram Reels to maps, all without the need to pull out your device. This innovation appears to be a more polished iteration of the once-trending Google Glass technology, aiming to blend practicality with style.
Set for release on September 30th, interested consumers can experience in-store demos at various retail locations, including Best Buy, LensCrafters, Sunglass Hut, Ray-Ban stores, and Verizon (availability varies by location). Excitingly, you can schedule a demo now to explore this cutting-edge technology firsthand.
Design and Comfort
The Meta Ray-Ban Display comes in two sizes—standard and large—and two sleek colors: black or sand. Notably, the glasses feature transition lenses that adapt to changing light conditions, darkening in sunlight and returning to clear indoors. The display is exclusively integrated into the right lens, presenting content in full color with a resolution of 600 by 600 pixels and a 20-degree field of view. According to The Verge’s Victoria Song, the monocular design, while functional, can be slightly distracting, though it does not significantly obstruct the user’s vision.
In terms of design, the frames are thicker than the previous Ray-Ban Meta models, with rounded edges and a more square overall shape. Additionally, the inclusion of overextension hinges on the temple arms caters to individuals with wider faces. Meta anticipates approximately six hours of battery life under mixed usage conditions, a claim that will be scrutinized in upcoming reviews.
Updates to Previous Models
Alongside the launch of the Meta Ray-Ban Display, Meta also announced the follow-up to their successful smart glasses, the Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2. Available for order at a starting price of $379, these updated glasses boast an impressive battery life of up to eight hours on a single charge—double the lifespan of their predecessor. The accompanying charging case is capable of recharging the glasses by 50% within just 20 minutes, offering an additional 48 hours of usage. Furthermore, the camera can capture video at resolutions up to 3K at 30fps and offers multiple recording settings.
Exciting New Releases
In a further expansion of their product line, consumers can also pre-order the new Oakley Meta Vanguard for $499, launching on October 21st. Characterized by its distinctive wraparound style, popular among sports enthusiasts, the Vanguard features a 12-megapixel camera with a 122-degree field of view, a versatile Action Button for quick access to various camera modes, and an impressive battery life of up to nine hours. Additionally, the model is rated IP67 for water and dust resistance, and integrates with Garmin services for enhanced functionality.
