Meta, in collaboration with its hardware partner EssilorLuxottica, is set to unveil the next generation of Ray-Ban AI glasses. Recent filings with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) have highlighted two new models, indicating that a launch could be imminent.
What to Expect from the New Models
The FCC filings describe these devices as production units, hinting at a potential release soon. When Meta revealed its second-generation Ray-Bans in late 2023, it followed a similar timeline after passing through FCC scrutiny.
Currently, the details remain somewhat under wraps as the filings have been heavily redacted. However, there are some intriguing insights to note. The marketing names for the upcoming models are identified as “RayBan Meta Scriber” and “RayBan Meta Blazer.” Additionally, the “Blazer” model will be offered in both regular and large sizes.
According to the FCC documents, a charging case was also part of the tests, suggesting convenience for users who want to charge their glasses on-the-go. The model numbers for these innovative products are RW7001 for the Blazer and RW7002 for the Scriber. This significant leap in model numbers from the currently available models points to possible substantial hardware upgrades, including the potential introduction of a more advanced chipset.
Enhanced Connectivity Features
One of the standout differences between the current models and these upcoming releases is their utilization of the Wi-Fi 6 UNII-4 band. This upgrade could lead to heightened reliability in high-speed data transfers, which will be particularly beneficial for applications like livestreaming and any AI features requiring live video transmission.
Market Performance and Future Directions
The Ray-Ban AI glasses have been a considerable success for both Meta and EssilorLuxottica, with over seven million pairs sold last year alone. Sales for 2023 and 2024 have already totaled around two million units, and the company is aiming to ramp up its manufacturing capacity significantly, targeting an annual production of 20–30 million units by the year’s end.
In 2025, Meta extended its partnership with EssilorLuxottica, launching the first Oakley-branded AI glasses, alongside Ray-Ban Display glasses featuring an integrated monocular display. During the company’s latest earnings call, CEO Mark Zuckerberg noted that sales of their glasses have tripled, asserting their position as one of the fastest-growing consumer electronics products to date. He further stated: “For Reality Labs, we’re directing most of our investment towards glasses and wearables going forward.”
Investment Shifts and Strategic Adjustments
In light of this strategic focus, Meta is significantly reducing its investments in virtual reality. Earlier this year, the company laid off 1,000 employees from Reality Labs and shut down various VR game studios. While there are concerns surrounding these changes, Meta recently reversed its decision to shut down the Horizon Worlds metaverse project in response to user feedback.
As the tech landscape continues to evolve, the upcoming release of Meta’s new Ray-Ban AI glasses seems poised to harness the growing consumer interest in wearables, bridging the gap between technology and everyday life.
