Mentra has officially launched its debut smart glasses, aptly named the Mentra Live. While their design may not break new ground in the competitive landscape of smart eyewear, what sets the Mentra Live apart is its utilization of an open-source operating system and a dedicated app store. This innovation empowers users to download Mini Apps tailored for a variety of tasks, notably emphasizing a range of livestreaming capabilities.
Mentra Live Smart Glasses Run on an Open-Source Software
The MiniApp Store, touted as the first of its kind for smart glasses, will be accessible via both iOS and Android through the Mentra application. Developers have been working with the Software Developer Kit (SDK), which became available in early 2025, to craft applications specifically for MentraOS. Many of these applications focus on leveraging the camera for livestreaming. Notably, Mentra asserts that its smart glasses are the only ones capable of livestreaming across various social media platforms, including Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), YouTube, and Twitch.
Among the intriguing applications is the “Chess Cheater” app, which employs the front-facing camera and artificial intelligence to analyze gameplay positions and suggest optimal next moves. The Mentra Live is powered by the MediaTek MTK8766 chip, featuring a low-power microcontroller that enhances battery life. Users can expect up to 12 hours of usage from a single charge, while the included 2,200mAh charging case extends the total battery life to an impressive 50 hours.
They’re Quite Light at Just 43 Grams
Despite their technological capabilities, the Mentra Live smart glasses weigh in at a mere 43 grams, making them one of the lighter options available. They come equipped with a 12MP camera that features a 119-degree field of view, capable of recording videos and capturing still images. Additionally, the device includes three microphones and stereo speakers, facilitating audio calls and music playback. In terms of aesthetics, the glasses are offered in a single black colorway.
The retail price for the Mentra Live smart glasses is set at $299, and they can be ordered directly from Mentra’s online store. Additionally, the glasses are prescription-ready for those who require corrective lenses. Initially, Mentra is releasing a limited batch of 1,000 pairs, with shipments scheduled to begin on February 15th. A second batch will follow shortly after, with limited availability set to ship on February 28th.
