I Can’t Believe I’m Saying This: The New 13-inch MacBook Air M5 is Worth the Extra $100
I cannot believe I am saying this out loud, but the $100 more expensive 13-inch MacBook Air M5 brings wonderful news, not because I enjoy spending more, but because the base model offers a compelling solution to my biggest pain point: the lack of storage.
For months, I struggled with low storage space messages and encountered functional roadblocks on my MacBook Air 13-inch M4. The $999 system, which I still love, originally shipped with a 256GB SSD. Initially, I deemed this storage ample for most of my work, but over time, I managed to chew through all but a few gigs, leading to alarming out-of-storage-space notifications and desperate “make space before installing this macOS update” alerts.
Tackling Storage Issues
In Adobe Photoshop 2026—the program I rely on for image editing—I repeatedly faced out-of-space errors on the scratch disk, leading to constant purges to mitigate the issue. While they worked temporarily, it was a frustrating cycle. It wasn’t a memory issue—my 16GB of unified memory performed admirably—but a storage one.
Where did all my space go? It turned out to be largely hidden within a massive 162GB system file on the MacBook’s drive, with little insight into what was consuming so much space. Despite trying various methods to identify large files, including third-party utilities, nothing provided clear answers.
I sought online advice, attempted to maintain an empty downloads folder, and regularly emptied my digital trash. However, with my operating system consuming almost 35GB and only 50GB left for files, images, videos, and Apple Intelligence, I often found myself in a state of digital panic. Working under these constraints felt like a digital straitjacket, squeezing the air out of my creativity.
Each time I ran out of space, it felt akin to a jack-in-the-box popping unexpectedly, startling me with anxiety. The experience was stifling, to say the least.
A Fresh Start
A week ago, I opted for a drastic solution: resetting my 13-inch MacBook Air M4. Although this did not entirely resolve my storage woes, it let me reassess my setup. I speculated that my OneDrive was duplicating files locally, potentially consuming an additional 40 to 50GB. Apple often conceals file storage information within the broad “System” category.
What if I didn’t need to worry about local versus cloud storage limitations? What if I could stop stressing over the larger videos in my Photos library?
The new MacBook Air M5 presents a thrilling prospect. Yes, it’s $100 more expensive than the last model, but it doubles the storage capacity to 512GB. It’s always been a known fact that hard drives expand exponentially—doubling or nothing.
With a potentially faster 13-inch MacBook Air M5, combined with double the storage space, my storage challenges will likely be solved instantaneously.
So here I am, celebrating a price increase because it accompanies a crucial upgrade: base storage. While I would have loved to see the price remain unchanged, considering the fluctuations with RAM prices, it’s remarkable that the MacBook Air M5, which starts with 16GB of RAM, didn’t experience an even larger price hike. Adding substantial storage with a minor increase in price is a noteworthy achievement.
I’m thrilled to see the M5 chip in action, although, to be candid, the M4 has been more than capable of handling every Photoshop task. The faster performance of the new chip is just icing on the cake.
I eagerly anticipate trying out the 13-inch MacBook Air M5 and perhaps retiring the MacBook Air M4 with its too-small 256GB drive.
