Apple’s Potential Innovation: Updating Macs While Still in the Box
Apple might be gearing up to enhance the customer experience for Mac buyers by rolling out a system that updates Macs while they remain in their boxes. This speculation is based on findings from the latest developer beta of macOS 26, also known as Tahoe.
According to reports from 9to5Mac, the macOS Tahoe 26 beta 3 contains early references and code related to this innovative system. This technology mirrors a feature already implemented in iPhones, known as Presto.
What is the Presto System?
The Presto system allows retailers to update iPhones to the latest version of iOS without removing the devices from their sealed packaging. When an iPhone arrives at a store, it can be placed into a specially designed rack with bays to facilitate this update. The rack supports up to six devices simultaneously, utilizing wireless technologies such as MagSafe and NFC to power on the phones and Wi-Fi for downloading the latest software updates.

Challenges Ahead for Macs
If Apple succeeds in implementing a similar system for Macs, it presents several intriguing questions. The nature of laptops and desktops requires a different approach, as they are larger and don’t incorporate NFC technology. Currently, it remains unclear how Apple would activate and then deactivate the hardware without physically handling it.
