Apple devices are renowned for their seamless closed ecosystem, which prioritizes compatibility and user experience; however, this has often come at the cost of third-party device support. For a long time, users have lamented the limitations imposed by Apple when it comes to integrating non-Apple smartwatches. Nevertheless, the impending release of iOS 26 may bring significant changes. Reports suggest that Apple is actively developing a new feature that would enable iPhone users to forward notifications to any third-party smartwatch.

Currently, Apple’s smartwatches are often regarded as the gold standard thanks to their harmonious integration with the broader Apple product suite. While iPhones can technically connect to third-party smartwatches, the performance and features are typically subpar in comparison to when they are paired with Android devices. This limitation stems from the restrictions that Apple has historically placed on third-party integrations.

As reported by MacWorld, Apple seems to be addressing these shortcomings. The company is reportedly developing a feature named “Notification Forwarding” specifically for non-Apple wearables. Although the precise functionality hasn’t been revealed, it is anticipated that this feature will allow third-party devices to receive and display notifications more seamlessly, enhancing user experience.

Several new features coming

Notification forwarding isn’t entirely new to Apple’s ecosystem; the company has previously enabled similar functionalities for connected accessories. However, past implementations have been limited and often caused frustration among users, leading many to disable the feature altogether. With iOS 26, Apple appears to be reevaluating its approach, potentially paving the way for a more user-friendly experience with third-party smartwatches.

Another promising feature under development is “AccessoryExtension.” This addition aims to streamline the pairing process between iPhones and third-party accessories, potentially mirroring the user-friendly experience of Google Fast Pair. It’s essential to keep in mind that both features are still in the development phase, and while they may debut alongside iOS 26, there’s a possibility that the actual rollout could be postponed to a future major iOS update.

As users eagerly await the enhancements in iOS 26, it appears that Apple is finally ready to embrace greater flexibility and compatibility within its ecosystem. Innovations like Notification Forwarding and the AccessoryExtension could drastically change how users interact with their devices, making the Apple ecosystem more inclusive and user-centric.
