Huawei Launches MatePad Edge and MateBook Fold Extraordinary Master Edition
In a dynamic unveiling at an event in China, Huawei introduced its newest line of devices, including the Mate 80 series, the Mate X7 foldable, and the all-new MatePad Edge 2-in-1 tablet. They also showcased the Extraordinary Master Edition of their MateBook Fold, marking a significant step in their venture into powerful, portable computing solutions.
Meet the MatePad Edge
The MatePad Edge is Huawei’s ambitious answer to the Microsoft Surface, designed as a tablet that can effectively replace your laptop. It boasts a 14.2-inch OLED display and a sleek, unibody aluminum chassis, which makes it both portable and stylish. At just 6.85 mm thick and weighing 789 grams, it is designed for mobility without sacrificing performance.
Under the hood, the MatePad Edge is powered by either the Kirin X90 or Kirin X90A chipset, offering configurations with 16-32GB RAM and storage options ranging from 256GB to a whopping 2TB. Huawei claims this new chipset delivers performance comparable to that of the Apple M5, marking a 3.8x performance increase over the previous-gen Kirin T92 SoC. To maintain optimal performance, the tablet features optional liquid cooling and dual vapor chambers.
Specifications and Features
The device’s display is impressive, featuring a 3,120 × 2,080 pixel resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. The OLED panel also offers a 3:2 aspect ratio and a peak brightness of up to 1,000 nits, making it suitable for a variety of tasks, from professional work to entertainment. Additionally, it supports stylus functionality via the Huawei M-Pencil Pro stylus, complemented by a six-speaker setup and four microphones for enhanced audio quality.
For users looking for versatility, an optional keyboard accessory is available, featuring a chicklet-style layout with 1.8mm key travel and a pressure-sensitive touchpad. The tablet is also equipped with a robust camera system, including a 50MP main camera with an f/1.8 aperture, an 8MP ultrawide lens, and a notable 32MP selfie camera.
Powerful Battery and Pricing
The MatePad Edge is powered by a substantial 12,900 mAh battery, supporting rapid 140W charging capabilities. However, the device features a limited selection of I/O options with only a single USB 3.1 Gen 1 port available.
Available in Space Gray and Bright Moon Silver, the MatePad Edge starts at CNY 5,999 (approximately $844) for the baseline 16/256GB variant, while the high-end 32GB RAM and 2TB SSD model is priced at CNY 12,999 (about $1,830).
The MateBook Fold Extraordinary Master Edition
Alongside the MatePad Edge, Huawei unveiled the MateBook Fold Extraordinary Master Edition. Offered in striking black and red color options, this device maintains key specifications from its standard model but comes equipped with 32GB of RAM and a 2TB SSD, retailing for CNY 26,999 (around $3,800).
