HMD Expands Feature Phone Capabilities at MWC 2026
At the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2026, HMD Global unveiled an ambitious vision for integrating modern smartphone functionalities into its traditional feature phone lineup. With a focus on enhancing digital access for under-connected populations, HMD aims to introduce a range of groundbreaking features and services. These include a digital wallet, an AI assistant, and video calling options, with key markets like India serving as the launchpad for these innovations throughout 2026.
Secure Digital Wallet for Remittances
One of the most significant announcements is the introduction of HMD’s digital wallet, which promises secure remittance capabilities. This service will facilitate receiving, storing, and cashing out funds through local payment systems. Targeting its initial rollout in India during the first half of the year, HMD has collaborated with fintech firm Kivi3 and blockchain innovator Polygon Labs to ensure robust device-level security, featuring PIN protection for user peace of mind.
Introducing AI Assistance
AI technologies are gaining traction across all device categories, and HMD is poised to integrate these capabilities into its upcoming feature phones. Partnering with India’s Sarvam AI, HMD plans to develop a dedicated AI assistant available through voice commands. Users will be able to perform tasks ranging from making calls to setting alarms and even turning on the phone’s torch. Additionally, the service will offer an AI chat experience tailored to answer simple queries.
Innovative Companion for Seniors
In a commendable initiative aimed at supporting the elderly, HMD is piloting an AI companion service, co-developed with InTouch. This program seeks to provide companionship specifically tailored for older users and is expected to begin trial testing in Europe. Following these trials, the company plans a global rollout, demonstrating HMD’s commitment to inclusivity and support for all age groups.
Enhanced Messaging with Xpress Chat
In line with its modern features, HMD is also launching Xpress Chat, an app designed to enhance messaging experiences on its feature phones. This new application will allow users to engage in video conferencing via the front-facing camera, as well as support voice messaging, group chats, and photo sharing, bridging the gap between basic communication and advanced social connectivity.
HMD’s strategic integration of these modern features into its feature phone offerings could revolutionize the digital landscape for many under-connected users, contributing to broader digital inclusion and accessibility. For more details on HMD’s exciting announcements, you can read more Here.
