Samsung Galaxy S25 FE: A Smart Mid-Range Offering

Samsung’s ‘Fan Edition’ concept continues to make waves in the smartphone market, effectively blending flagship features with a more accessible price point. This strategy aims to compete fiercely in the mid-range segment while offering enthusiasts a taste of flagship technology. The Galaxy S25 FE, announced at IFA, signifies a shift in timing that addresses the previous model’s shortcomings, debuting a full month earlier than the Galaxy S24 FE.

Designed to create distinction from its successors, the S25 FE arrives with Android 16 out of the box, setting it apart as the first mid-ranger to do so. Samsung’s choice to use the Berlin tech show for a mobile launch recalls a nostalgic time when the Galaxy Note series was introduced, adding significant weight to this product unveiling.

Design and Build

The Galaxy S25 FE showcases a design language that resonates with the Galaxy S25 series. With a flat glass front and back and a flat frame constructed from ‘Enhanced Armor Aluminium,’ this device not only looks premium but feels substantial in hand, measuring a sleek 7.4mm and weighing a manageable 190g. Available in Navy, Icy Blue, Jet Black, and White, the color options maintain the elegance characteristic of Samsung’s design ethos. Additionally, the phone is IP68 resistant and fortified with Victus+ glass, ensuring durability.

Handling the device gave me a sense of familiarity; it feels almost indistinguishable from the Galaxy S25+, even to the casual observer. This consistency in design reflects Samsung’s commitment to delivering a premium user experience across its range.

Camera Capabilities

The rear camera setup mirrors the Galaxy S25, featuring three individual lenses. The standout components are a 50MP main camera and a 12MP ultrawide lens. However, the telephoto lens is downgraded to an 8MP sensor, which may raise some eyebrows among photography enthusiasts. On the front, a substantial upgrade has been made to the selfie camera, now offering a robust 12MP. While I await a full review to test the camera’s capabilities thoroughly, initial impressions suggest that the 50MP lens is poised to be the standout feature.

Display and Performance

The 6.7-inch screen features slimmer bezels compared to its predecessor and boasts an impressive peak brightness of 1900 nits, enhancing visibility even under direct sunlight. Although the FHD+ resolution lags behind the S25+, the 120Hz refresh rate, combined with the OLED technology, promises vibrant colors and smooth transitions, which proved satisfactory during my hands-on experience.

Powering the Galaxy S25 FE is Samsung’s Exynos 2400 chipset, paired with 8GB of RAM, ensuring efficient multitasking and performance. Various storage options include 128GB, 256GB, or 512GB, catering to diverse user needs. The incorporation of a larger vapor chamber enhances thermal management, suggesting improved sustainment during gaming and demanding tasks. Although I predict decent performance based on prior experiences, Samsung’s optimized Android interface should deliver a capable experience for the everyday user.

Battery Life and Software

The device houses a 4900mAh battery, supporting 45W wired charging. While this aligns closely with the premium S25+, it’s worth noting its slower 15W wireless charging may leave some users wanting more. The efficiency of the Exynos 2400 chip in terms of power consumption remains to be seen through extended testing.

The S25 FE runs on OneUI 8, featuring AI-enhanced functionalities that include generative image editing and instant slow-motion in the photo gallery. Samsung’s commitment to seven years of Android updates, along with the promise of seven years of security updates, positions the S25 FE as a strong contender in the mid-tier market, comparable to offerings from Google like the Pixel 9a.

Pricing and Availability

The Samsung Galaxy S25 FE is available now, starting at £649/€749 for the 128GB model. However, there was no confirmation regarding its release in the U.S. market at the time of writing.
