Epic Games and Disney Join Forces for Star Wars-Themed Creator Experiences in Fortnite
Epic Games has made waves by announcing a significant new feature in its popular game Fortnite, allowing creators to design custom Star Wars-themed experiences. This initiative is part of an increasingly collaborative relationship with Disney, set to enhance the creative landscape of the game.
New Features for Fortnite Creators
As of Thursday, creators can start designing unique experiences that are set to launch for players on May 1st. This capability comes soon after Epic introduced the Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN), a powerful tool enabling users to construct experiences that coexist with existing modes like battle royale and Fortnite Festivals.
Since its inception, the UEFN has expanded the game’s universe to include several high-profile franchises, such as Lego and Squid Game. However, eager creators have long awaited the inclusion of Star Wars elements. “Since day one, every creator was like, ‘When are we getting Star Wars?’” stated Andre Balta, Epic’s senior director of ecosystem growth, in an interview with The Verge.
Epic’s Long-Standing Relationship with Star Wars
Epic Games has enjoyed a beneficial partnership with the Star Wars franchise, having featured crossovers for the past seven years. Notable collaborations include an exclusive clip from Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and even an entire season dedicated to the Jedi saga. Balta described Disney as an “amazing” partner, emphasizing their commitment to empowering creators with a rich trove of assets.
However, creators should keep in mind that working with licensed brands comes with specific rules. If a creator intends to develop a Star Wars-themed island, they must agree to allocate 20 percent of their payout to Disney. This model maintains a balance between creative flexibility and brand integrity.
Features and Characters Available for Creation
With Epic’s toolkit, creators have access to an array of iconic characters and elements from the Star Wars universe. From beloved figures like Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader to iconic vehicles such as X-wings and TIE fighters, the possibilities are extensive. Creators will also be able to implement weapons including lightsabers and blasters, as well as rideable Tauntauns, immersing players in a vibrant Star Wars experience.
The Future of the Partnership: A Persistent Universe
Looking ahead, Disney has announced plans to invest $1.5 billion in Epic Games, a partnership aimed at building a “persistent universe” tied to Fortnite. Balta noted that this project is still “deep in development.” Recent comments from Disney’s CEO, Josh D’Amaro, during a shareholder meeting hint at exciting developments related to this universe. Although specific details remain under wraps, it is clear that Star Wars is just the beginning for this collaboration.
As Epic and Disney continue to deepen their partnership, fans of both brands can look forward to a thrilling array of custom experiences in Fortnite, blending creativity with the rich lore of the Star Wars universe.
