European Commission Moves to Ban Huawei and ZTE Mobile Networking Equipment
The European Commission is reportedly planning to impose a ban on Huawei and ZTE mobile networking equipment across all EU member states. This decision arises in the wake of recent comments made by Vice President Henna Virkkunen, who emphasized the urgent need for member states to comply with the Commission’s 2020 toolbox for 5G security and to eliminate the use of high-risk vendors in mobile networks.
Importance of 5G Security for Europe’s Economy
According to Thomas Regnier, a spokesperson for the EU Commission, the security of 5G networks is critical for sustaining Europe’s economic landscape. He stated, “The Commission urges member states that have not yet implemented the 5G Toolbox to also adopt relevant measures to effectively and quickly address the risk. A lack of swift action exposes the EU as a whole to a clear risk.”
Current State of Compliance Among EU Member States
Each EU member state currently retains the authority to make its own decisions regarding telecom infrastructure. However, the introduction of a swift new directive from the Commission could standardize a bloc-wide ban on 5G equipment from vendors such as Huawei and ZTE. Notably, countries like Germany, Finland, and Sweden have already taken action to restrict the use of Chinese network equipment, while nations such as Spain and Greece continue to allow Huawei and ZTE products within their communications networks.
