Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition Coming to Mac

As anticipation builds among Mac users, the acclaimed AAA title Cyberpunk 2077 is set to arrive on Apple devices later this year. CD Projekt Red (CDPR) has been diligently working to ensure that this groundbreaking game performs well on all Apple Silicon-powered devices, particularly the M1 chip and newer versions.

I was fortunate to experience another demo of Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition on a 16-inch MacBook Pro with an M4 Max chip and 128GB of RAM. To say it was impressive would be an understatement.

Stunning Performance on Apple Silicon

The demo showcased the game on ‘Ultra’ settings, achieving a remarkable frame rate of 120 frames per second—all powered by Apple’s M4 Max chip without the need for a discrete GPU. This impressive performance is made possible through the usage of Apple’s upcoming Metal 4 technology, which includes enhancements like MetalFX Frame Interpolation. The game’s graphics were not only visually stunning but also incredibly responsive, raising questions about how it might perform on less potent Apple devices.

During my conversation with Pawel Sasko, Associate Game Director of CD Projekt Red, I inquired about performance on other Macs, particularly lower-end models like the MacBook Air. Sasko noted that Cyberpunk 2077 operates on CDPR’s proprietary Red Engine Four, which is designed for scalability. “It’s trying to use everything that given platform provides,” he explained.

Optimizing Performance Across Devices

Sasko emphasized that the Red Engine dynamically adjusts to the hardware available, enabling the game to run effectively on a variety of devices. While he didn’t disclose specific performance metrics for different Mac configurations, he assured that CDPR is focused on optimizing performance across the board. Recent advancements have even allowed the team to enhance the visual quality of character clothing in the game.

Those using more powerful chips, such as the M4, M4 Pro, or M4 Max, can expect the best gameplay experience, while those with entry-level chips will still be able to enjoy the game, albeit with varied performance.

The excitement is palpable as CDPR is expected to finalize and polish the game further, aiming for a late 2025 release for Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition on Mac.

Integration with macOS 26 Tahoe

Shortly after seeing the demo, Apple introduced macOS 26 Tahoe, which will feature a new Games app. While it remains to be seen if CDPR will integrate with this new platform, it will certainly benefit from the Game Overlay feature that allows for easy management of game settings, including brightness and volume adjustments.

As we edge closer to the anticipated release, the excitement surrounding Cyberpunk 2077 on Mac continues to grow. Gamers can expect a high-performance version of this beloved title that leverages the capabilities of Apple Silicon to its fullest.
