Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, is pushing the boundaries of artificial intelligence with plans to introduce an “adult mode” for ChatGPT. This feature is designed to allow users to engage in explicit text conversations with the chatbot. While it sounds straightforward, the rollout has encountered significant complications.
In October, Altman announced via X that the feature would be launched in December. However, the rollout was delayed due to issues with age verification, prompting concerns from both users and stakeholders about safety and accessibility.
A recent report from the Wall Street Journal indicates that there are more layers to this story than initially disclosed. It suggests that when Altman made the announcement, he had not informed OpenAI employees, resulting in confusion among staff and executives. Consequently, the anticipated December launch quickly became untenable.
Is ChatGPT Actually Ready for This?
OpenAI established an advisory council comprising psychologists and neuroscientists to oversee responsible AI developments. When the council learned about the adult mode initiative, they expressed strong objections. Their primary concern revolved around emotional over-reliance on the chatbot, particularly given reports of users forming intense bonds with AI, leading to tragic outcomes, including suicides. One council member notably cautioned against creating a “sexy suicide coach,” a phrase that starkly highlights the ethical dilemmas entwined in the project.

Additionally, a more practical challenge has emerged: the age verification system developed by OpenAI has been misclassifying minors as adults approximately 12% of the time. Given that nearly 100 million users under the age of 18 engage with the platform each week, this misclassification could potentially expose millions of children to adult content.
What Happens Now?
As a result of these concerns, OpenAI has decided to delay the launch of the adult mode without providing a confirmed new date. The company has indicated that it requires additional time to refine the user experience. When the adult mode is eventually made available, it will be text-only, without any generation of erotic images, voice, or video content.
Furthermore, OpenAI has committed to training its models to discourage users from forming exclusive relationships with the chatbot and to emphasize the importance of real-world interactions. However, whether these measures will be sufficient to quell growing internal and external criticism remains uncertain.
From a personal standpoint, I believe that AI models should prioritize the well-being of users and remain distanced from generating erotic content until robust safeguards and ethical guidelines are firmly in place. The risks associated with previous mishaps in AI content generation highlight the need for caution; we must avoid repeating potentially disastrous scenarios.
