DJI’s Fly App Adds Apple Watch Compatibility
Despite the looming prospect of a total ban in the USA, DJI is making strides in enhancing the performance and features of its existing drones. The latest update to the DJI Fly mobile app serves as a testament to this commitment, introducing support for Apple Watch compatibility.
New Features for Selected Models
This exciting update allows users to monitor and control three specific DJI drone models—namely, the DJI Neo, Neo 2, and Flip—directly from their Apple Watch. Each of these models is designed with user-friendliness in mind, particularly for individuals who appreciate simple, controller-free and smartphone-controlled flight experiences. The addition of Apple Watch control is a logical progression that enhances user convenience.
The update, now at version 1.19.4, enables users to connect their Apple Watch via Wi-Fi to their drone. They can not only view a live feed from the drone’s camera but also monitor battery life and issue voice commands for flight tasks. While manual flight control using the Apple Watch’s touchscreen is not an option—likely a prudent decision, given the small screen size—users can still enjoy a hands-free experience.

Requirements and User Feedback
Notably, the update requires an Apple Watch Series 8 or a newer model. However, anecdotal evidence from users suggests that older models, such as the Series 7, may still be compatible, with one user on Reddit reporting successful functionality.
From personal experience testing all three drone models, it is evident that they are tailored for such control options. While larger DJI drones demand more precise manual control, the Neo and Flip models excel at short, autonomous flights—taking off from your hand, capturing a photo, and returning effortlessly.
What’s Next for DJI?
Exciting innovations seem poised to continue from DJI, especially for consumers outside the US. Amid the potential product launch hiatus due to regulatory pressures, the company looks set to maintain its steady release cycle in other markets. Anticipated products include the DJI Avata 360—a groundbreaking drone featuring a 360-degree camera—and the DJI Osmo Pocket 4, an updated edition of their well-loved vlogging camera. Keep an eye on upcoming news regarding these releases in the near future.
