Apple Poised to Overtake Samsung in Smartphone Shipments
After 14 years of rivalry in the smartphone market, Apple is on track to reclaim its position as the global leader in smartphone shipments, a title currently held by Samsung. According to insights from Counterpoint Research, Apple is projected to ship over 243 million iPhones in 2025, which would equate to an estimated 19.4% share of the global smartphone market. In contrast, Samsung is expected to ship 235 million units, resulting in an 18.7% market share.
The Success of the iPhone 17 Series
The recent success of the iPhone 17 series has significantly contributed to Apple’s projected growth. Reports indicate that Q3 shipments displayed a remarkable 9% increase compared to last year’s iPhone 16 series. Moreover, demand for the iPhone 17 series in the United States surged by 12% in the first four weeks post-launch. In China, the demand figures were even more impressive, with an 18% increase noted during the same period.
Market Dynamics Favoring Apple
Several market dynamics are working in Apple’s favor. Many consumers who purchased smartphones during the COVID-19 pandemic are now entering their upgrade cycle, creating renewed demand for new devices. This trend is expected to contribute to a widening gap between Apple and Samsung in the coming years, as projections indicate that Apple may maintain its lead in global smartphone shipments through 2029.
